Why do some people create "junk" programs (i.e., computer viruses)?

I just don't understand why some people are wasting time to create "junk" programs (i.e. computer viruses). If they are programmers, why don't they create a good software that will be beneficial to others? They can sell a good program, can't they? Do you think they are out of mind? *sigh*

Those people have nothing better to do with their time than to hurt people and cause problems. Those people are troublemakers and should be locked up. It is ashame that people use their knowledge and skills to create things that will hurt people and companies and possibly themselves as well. They should use their intelligence for more useful things like finding ways to prevent terrorism or helping the homeless or something more useful.

Yes, but don't be ignorant. The virusmakers which actually make viruses which are hard to delete, are money hunting businessmen. It might be that for normal people it seem that they are only made to annoy you. But that is not the case. The "businessmen" want to get money from internet. In ways like we get from mylot. But instead of honest posting. They take matters to their own hands and force the adds to the innocent users and squeeze the money out of the pockets.
There might be also these virusmakers which just make them for fun. But they are called "scriptkiddies" if you have firewall and virus protection there is no way "scriptkiddie" can do any harm to your computer.
Always remember. Internet is a big business.

The reason people do such things is they have not the maturity or intelligence to see the wrong they are doing..They are hopelessly full of self and can't think of how much they are hurting others.

This is game of $$$$$ . If your computer is right protected, would you go for any antivirus ? I hope no ! So what will the antivirus company is meant for if there is no Virus at all .. Hope you can understand what i meant to say.

Not sure if I understand your meaning, but it looks as though you're insinuating that the security vendors themselves are writing the malware. That's silly. No singular antivirus product can keep up with what's out there now, because bot herders are using more polymorphic code now, and code of higher quality.
The Internet is very big, and it takes time to track down a criminal, if he/she is ever caught at all. Here's a story of one man who was recently convicted of infecting 250,000 machines, a first for the U.S.: http://newsfeedresearcher.com/data/articles_t45/idt2007.11.10.01.13.36.html
There are rogue security companies out there, but most of the names you haven't heard. Large companies like Grisoft, Symantec, and McAfee make far too much money already to need to cheat. And furthermore, they're too high-profile to engage in such fraud; there are plenty of honest people in the world, and an enormous company like Symantec has far too much to lose.
If you disagree with me, why don't you present me with an article or something to prove your position? Personally, I think you've been fooled into believing a dissatisfied customer's myth. "Believe none of what you hear, and half of what you see," that's what they say. Even in church, we follow along in our pew Bibles as scripture is being read, so we know we're being fed the bread of the Word, not hogwash.

santuccie,
I agree with you. Security software companies such as Symantec, McAffee, etc won't jeopardize their good brand. People tend to talk and talk. If someone knows that such companies are creating "junk" programs, their good brand will absolutely tarnish. Let's assume that there are no "junk" programs. But those security software companies are still needed in order to secure online businesses, networking, etc.

Great question,I guess some people chose to use their talents in a bad way instedn of good, maybe they think they are going to be able to make a name for themselves or such. Sometimes they use the virus ect to get your information. It is sad and I wish we could make them stop.

Yes, I also wish them stop doing it. I am sick of buying anti-virus software.

its a great question....
i didn't knew anything about viruses but the responds have taught me lot...
i am a novice programmer and i know little abt these junk codes which harms other computers....
sometimes the main source i.e the programmer who wrote the virus has no knowledge what they have created can be so harmful........sometimes money makes them blind....
who knows maybe in near future i am going to create a virus
let's hope not.....
but thanks for this discussion

I think that the answer to this question is very simple. If one makes a computer program no one would by it, well at least not a lot of people would because today there are so many programs (there's so much of everything) and people don't have money nor they need million versions of the same thing so someone makes an anti-virus and then creates a virus, spread the virus and voila IT'S done because if you don't want to format your computer and loose your dates you would have to by the anti-virus in order to heal your computer. And some viruses can really damage your computer that much that you can't even start it so...

See my responses to #4 and #5. There are rogue security companies out there, but they're not the big names like Symantec and McAfee. They're the ones who download an adware to your machine, then a "warning" box pops up and tells you you're infected and should download this program to get it cleaned. But even these people are not the ones creating Storm worm and MPack. These people are in full violation of the law, and don't want you to know who they are.

For some... it is simply a form of terrorism against capitalism.
For others... it is a way to get a high paid job as a security analyst for a big software company or an agency which requires a high level of security.
When they work against you... the best way is to buy them to work for you.
Those people are not mad. On the contrary... they are very smart... computer smart anyway...
If you want to see what those people can really do... watch the movie "Die Hard 4".

I think it is for information. The human existance is based on information. Wars are started for information. I think these people want to get to more information. And improving their programmming skills might also be the reason. Some of them want challenge and this gives them a good one. Anyway the people who steal cardit cards, paypal accounts etc are just hungry for money not information and you could say they are the "bad guys".

Like some of the previous posters have said, it makes them money by forcing you to watch some adds. Like if you get a "naughty" material popup. The company who makes that "naughty" material. Pay for the virus makers to show you that add. I am not actually sure if the companies know about these virusmakers. I really hope not. But i really wonder who would take interest to add which came from virus. Its just so ironic and stupid.
Ofcourse there is some teenagers too, which want your internet usernames and passwords so they can get their benefit by stealing your money (example paypal) or stealing internet gaming passwords (stealing or items and equipment). They usually use things called "keylogger", whenever you stroke a key in your keyboard, it sends the key you pushed to the virus makers computer and then he can freely just look when you log in for example paypal and steal your account information. Then he can just take your money and laugh.
For precausions of these not happening you should get proper firewall and antivirus program. Free ones work well, but trust me. The paid ones work much better. That is ofcourse if you want to waste money for your security. Lets say that free antivirus programs are like insurances from untrusted companys. Paid antivirus programs are good insurances for your computer and security.

Friendship, I believe that people doing "junk programs" are the same person who produces anti-virus softwares.

Lots of people who create these junk programs have no regard for others and I feel they must just have tooooo much time on their hands. Some of these people, though, may be programmers who have been turned down by the companies of their choices and just decide that if they can't help with their ideas, they will destroy the ideas of others.
I don't understand people like this, but this is our world as it is today.
Take care!

They create viruses to make money, cause havoc and generaly be a pain in the butt. I am of the opinion that there are hackers/virus creators that are employed by companies such as Norton or Mcafee so they have something to protect people from so they don't lose business. I think they are out of their minds yes and..very very unethical.

It's just the same. Why people do bad things? Why people do not do good things? The illustration works the same for those making viruses and trojans. But sometimes they do that because they want to show people what they capable of.

like everywhere we have good people and that people in every technology we have a good side and the bedside and so the back people tried to always a capitalise on the bank's side of the technology and maybe that is the reason they are the people who created viruses and other programmes which are nothing but a problem to common people. Home actually cannot help these kinds of people they simply enjoy to create things like this triggered an enjoyment from such activities. So there are good people who are always trying to stop the bad people wrong with being over with the band programmes. And that is the reason why in the software is like anti-virus and firewall.

I think it's a combination, some people just have to much idiol time on their hands and others just want to see what they can accomplish. If they would only channel their minds towards good rather than evil the internet would be a much better place.
