My folks are older and so I tell them I love them every time I talk on the phone or see them because it may be the last time.

My home lies in a remote village, in our hometown, all of us express our emtions to our parents to use"mom and dad, are you ok these days? Take care of yourselves, etc"instead of " I love you." I think it's a little difficult for them to accept this expression---"I love you" now, maybe ten years later, they can.LOL I think if you care your parents always, whatever expressions that you use to concern them are not very important, you just need express your feeling to them in your way.^^
