For Those of Us Who DON'T Agree with PETA...

I'm just trying to start a post here, after ripping my hair out trying to post in the "Pro-Peta" threads here, for those of us who love animals and want them to be safe, healthy, and well-cared for...but who don't agree with what Peta stands for and how they run their business. What are your opinions on them? And what organizations to you support or donate to instead of Peta?

I am an animal lover and rescuer and disagree a lot with PETA. They are a large charity that raises a LOT of money but much of it goes right into making glossy handouts and raising more money. Much of PETA is more interested in making a "statement" than the welfare of the animals or educating people on the proper treatment. For example, the big "mink farm liberations" and other similar taking animals out of a situation - they actually have poor planning and little regard for the animals. Once the statement is made and they "free the animals" they do not think about what happens to the animals afterwards or where they are supposed to go and they are often euthanized. They also target young, young people with the message "You like animals, right? Then you should become a part of PETA" (obviously i am paraphrasing) If you want to really help animals, look into Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Saving Shelter Pets, Inc., Alley Cat Allies, and Dogs Deserve Better and also your very local animal rescue. Find out which ones pull dogs from kill shelters. I personally volunteer for Saving Shelter Pets. I have been impressed with their fiscal responsibility (administrative costs like web hosting and tax filing fees get paid for through seperate fundraising and not from money people give to save animals). They are also pragmatic (save who they can save), caring, and humane. Go to savingshelterpet dot com, alleycatalleys dot com, and dogs deserve better dot com to find out more.

i meant savingshelterpets dot com - i forgot the "s" on the end! Yes, there are few truly no kills, but there are shelters who just only euthanize if the dog is really beyond hope and their pain is unmanageable and excruciating (which makes sense) but cannot call themselves "nokill" but have to say "nokill philosophy whenever possible" because radical people would give them a real problem for that one dog they humanely euthanized rather than concentrating on the perfectly adoptable animals that get euthanized everyday at shelters across america or the country they are in. Pay attention to local groups to and if they lose their focus, find another one to donate to.

Thanks, I'll look at some of those today when I get time! My favortite shelter out here is www.animalhouseshelter.com and I volunteer there and donate when I can...I love all the dogs and cats at www.orphansofthestorm.org but won't support them based on the fact that they lied to the police about the signing over of 4 dogs to them, resulting in their deaths by starvation! Thanks for your great posts!

I agree. I support a lot of the shelters and rescues in my area, and obviously do not support or donate to Peta anymore. I think the smaller organizations really care about the animals, and that the money and supplies probably go to much better use, instead of Peta using my $16 a month to buy bombs. I realize that there may be very few true no-kill shelters, but Peta doesn't even try to keep them alive or find homes for them!

I am an animal lover, but I honestly know very little about PETA. What direction would you point me in if I wanted to read up on what they are about and how their business is run?

You should certainly check out their own sites at www.peta.org and www.peta2.org to at least see their side of things. But the sites I mainly look at for my view of things is www.petakillsanimals.com www.myspace.com/thetruthaboutpeta and www.thisistrue.com/peta.htm Everyone has their own opinion on it, of course...I just think that Peta is kind of crazy, and that everything that they do is for publicity and awareness for THEM, not the animals. It's a proven fact on numerous sites that Peta kills over 90% of the animals they take in for rescue, rehab, etc., and that they don't adequately try to find them good loving homes. Only 1% of the millions they rake in every year goes to help animals!

Iagree with you! i love animals, and wildlife conservation, but I think PETA is to radical. i'd rather support the humane society or the Irwins' cnservation group.

Me too. Local groups are obviously a little easier to handle...and they don't get enough money and volunteers. I volunteer to go walk and groom dogs and cats at the shelters around here all the time, and I donate and collect supplies for them, especially around the winter months. The Irwins clearly really cared for animals, and were passionate about educating the public about them. Peta likes to bash him, too, saying he pretty much deserved what happened to him, and that he shouldn't have been torturing animals! Peta is sick.
