how to learn Japanese, but the writing...

I think i want to learn japanese, i would not mind, but the writing looks difficult, but they also have a way of using western style letters. Can one learn Japanese this way? or do i have to learn the japanese style of writing. If i cannot read the writing then i dont think i can learn any language. thanks for responses.
