Woman Lost Over 500 Pounds

ABC News show Good Morning America had a very heartwarming story this morning that really made me feel good. It was about a woman who weighed over 600 pounds and had become a virtual prisoner in her home due to shame and embarrassment. A relative struck upon the idea of giving her a computer, and she says before she knew it she had become so involved with meeting people and making friends online, she had lost a considerable amount of weight. I consider this a story of how the internet can be used successfully despite all the bad things you hear about it. In telling her story, she said that the people she met on the internet were unable to judge her on first appearance, thus her confidence grew enough to enable her to open up to them in discussions that interested her, and that took away her need to constantly eat to fill the emptiness inside. She now weighs around 170 pounds and looks great. I call this a real success story!

I didn't see it this morning but I think I've seen that woman on Dr. Phil and if she has lost all that weight I have to give her a looooot of credit! There are a few people out there that are having obscene weight problems and hopefully she will be an inspiration for them.

Yes, ctry, and I think it is an incredible feat to have been done completely on her own. So many people are opting for weight-loss surgery these days.

I do also that is wonderful to lose that much weight. I agree that is a great success story. Sometimes it just takes others to talk to you positive to make things better and easier for us.

I agree, Shaun. This woman was ready to be released from her self-imposed prison, and someone just happened to come up with what she needed.

I thought it was interesting, sigma, just as long as she doesn't allow her obsession with food to be transferred to something worse.

A success story like this is truly inspiring. As someone who has lost 100 lbs, something like this is life-changing and I hope she can maintain the loss.
The internet is both good and bad. There are many positive things that can come from its use, such as in this story. But it's also all too easy to develop an addiction to the computer in a different way, because of the anonymity. For someone who already feels outcast because of the way they look, it would be incredibly easy to sit in the house on the computer all day and hide, because as you say, no one can see what you look like on the computer, so you can be anyone you want to be. I know many people who sit in front of their computers all day and don't move, which of course leads to weight gain.
What I think is important is to help people BEFORE they find themselves in such dire circumstances. It's becoming the norm in North America for people to be around 250 lbs. Adults are becoming obese, children are becoming overweight, and it's all a result of too much time spent in front of a screen of some sort (computer or TV), too little movement because we're addicted to our vehicles and won't even get out of the car to go into a restaurant to get something, using the drive-thru instead, and too little education about what constitutes proper nutrition. If it's cheap, fast and calorie laden, we love it, and it's killing us. If we could reach out to people before they become trapped in their homes, we could avoid such situations.

I agree with what you say to some extent, mmiller, but like this woman said, it was her eating habits that got her into trouble in the first place. A person would have to realize they have a problem if they wolf down 4 cheeseburgers at a sitting, or, as she confessed to, got up through the night to eat the burgers cold right out of the fridge. There is nothing normal about behavior like that.

No, it's not normal behavior, but speaking as someone who used to be a compulsive overeater, it's really easy after a while to convince yourself that portions like that were normal. It's an eating disorder, but it's not something that develops overnight, and it's usually tied to some emotional problems and as you say, trying to fill a void.
We all know that in restaurants we're given two or three times what we actually need. Our ideas of what constitutes a portion of food is extremely skewed. And if one surrounds themselves with people who eat like you do, or you isolate yourself, it's really easy to start thinking that 4 cheeseburgers is normal. It's a symptom of the illness. And shame and embarrassment about it actually ends up leading to more overeating.
I used to binge horribly. A double bacon cheeseburger with extra large fries and a large chocolate shake seemed like a normal portion of food. I can remember eating an entire 6 pack (tacos) and a pound of potato tots from Taco Johns. And that didn't seem abnormal. I used to buy tons of brownies and garbage foods and sit in my car and eat them all. I had a sort of mixed up bulemia--all the binge without the purge. Looking back, it's disgusting and I'm ashamed of it. I was 315 lbs when I finally hit rock bottom and decided that something needed to be done or I'd end up killing myself with food. It took me a year to lose the weight and during that time I did everything I could to educate myself about nutrition.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I understand how things like this can happen. It's definitely not normal, and I think people need to be aware of the emotional issues that often accompany morbid obesity. There aren't a terrible lot of people who get that big simply because they enjoy food. A lot of people are simply messed up and need help and often don't get that help until they're 500 lbs and think that the only way to live is by having surgery.
I'm really proud that this woman was able to do what she did, and I hope she never finds herself relapsing.

I thought it was a very human and heartwarming story, chunter. She looks like a different person and said she started to make drapes from the old skirt she used to wear, LOL.

She lost almost 3 people. That is an awesome accomplishment. It is so sad when people judge others by the way they look. We have so little control over how we we look. Even our weight is often so difficult to control. It is not a reason to ridicule or shun someone. I hope she lives a long and happy life!!

Yes, Adoniah, she should be really proud of herself. It had to take a lot of willpower to lose such an amount of weight. People are much too judgmental in our society.

This is really great. It is nice to see that she has bettered herself, in confidence and all. I think when you find friends on the net, it can be for the better. You just have to be really careful.

What a great story. I did see part of the report but was interrupted very early yesterday morning and missed the last part of the story. Just to think of the weight loss and the fact her self esteem changed, gives me the goosebumps.
I've been out of work for a couple of months with a bad back. MyLot has helped me get through it and earn a little bit of money so it's been positive for me in that respect. I've never had any incidents on the internet but then again I am not frequenting the single sites or looking for a partner.
Thanks for posting this discussion,
carolbee

The internet can be helpful in many ways, carolbee, and there are so many more things to do than the singles sites and trolling for a partner.

Sitting in front of a computer helped someone LOSE weight? That's great, but I think stories like that are few and far between. I'm glad to hear it helped this lady save her life though. You never know what will help someone. Everyone is different.

I was in a really down situation when I came upon myLot. It did not solve all of my problems, like money problems, that I thought it would. It did, however, give me caring, accepting friends, and a place to voice my thoughts. It improved my frame of mind, and that is why I am still here, a year later.

Yes, GG, this site does have a way of growing on you. In the beginning I didn't know if I could survive on myLot, but I have managed to hang in there.

I think she was also on the Oprah show last week - most definitely a success story and good on her for getting out there and doing something about it. She's a S-hero in my book!

Well, maddysmommy, evidently she didn't have to "get out there" to lose the weight. She lost it while working on her computer from home.

I missed both the news show and this discussion back when it started. Awesome about the weight this woman lost, truly inspiring.
But I want to add that the computer and Internet are important to many of us who are mobility impaired for a variety of reasons.
I know that it has given me so much richness in living. I belong to a on-line community of christian women, and I have made several very good friendships there. And it is true that because we don't 'see' people we can get to know the person better, or at least without some of our preconceived ideas. I now stop for a few days as a guest of a woman who is half my age. I feel if we had 'seen' each other at another place, say church, we might have liked each other but would not have become such close friends.

A truly inspiring success story worldwise! It is so easy for people who are so overweight to give up hope and life becomes a vicious circle for them- it is so lovely to hear that someone felt enabled by the people she met on the internet to lose so uch weight and regain her life - I am sure she is still online as well as having a far more fulfilling social life! xxx
