watching my children enjoy their first snow day of the season today brought back many many memories of my snow days as a child. sitting around the tv early in the am praying your school shows across the bottom of the screen and when it finally does you crawl back into bed or on the couch and catch up on some long missed cartoons then beg and beg until mom gives in to let you go out and play! and well basically thats how it played out this morning with my children its funny how that works out . how about you did you have a snow day today??? do you recall how you snow days were spent growing up?? please share

My kids school have a special program that if school is called off you get an automated phone call telling you, no more having to get up at 6 to watch the tv to see if your school is on the list it is great I just wait for the phone to ring.
My kids love it when they get snow days my son wants to build a snowman but so far we have only had an ice storm no snow storm yet.
I spent my snow days as a kid going back to bed and sleeping most of the day!

When I was a child we lived near a golf course.
Huge hills for sledding on a snow day.

Well we didnt have snow this weekend but we did have ice on Saturday but it is all gone now. I remember one snow day when I was a kid. It was a horrible storm and it knock out the power. So we decided to drag out all our old barbies and dolls and play with them. Mind you we were around 12 to 13 years old and if anyone would have asked us if we played with doll we would say "Heck No" so my sisters and I sat and played dolls by candle light. I will never forget that day.

Where are you? I saw your ice storm comment in 1999 and we had one bad in Arkansas in February of 1996. Luckily enough, we only lost power for a day and a half, but lots of blankets and some oil heaters kept us warm. My mom and dad would take turns staying up at night watching the heaters incase it got too hot or ran empty. Those heaters are a severe fire hazard.
I do remember we kept all of our food outside on the back porch. Our meat and milk/eggs were all on the porch, and we used snow to cover them up to keep them cool. The drink boxes I used to inhale every day as a kid were colder outside than they were in the fridge!

In my school days in the 60's my parents had to call to see

And I walked 2 miles in the snow also. HAHAHA!

When I was growing up, we had school no matter what the weather was. By the time my children were in school, they canceled school a lot due to the weather. I too love to watch kids play in the snow.

When I was growing up, they still had the one room schools. The kids were not bused as far as they are tody. Most of us had to walk long distances to catch the bus. I had to walk one mile. Most people did not have a phone so they could not notify the students if they closed schools.

To be honest, i never did enjoy a snow day. On all of the snow days ive seen, i had either been ill or not allowed. The one i remember is going outside and all the snow was melting so i couldn't play in it. If it snows in England this year, i am having a snowball competition.!

I grew up on Long Island, NY and we ALWAYS had snow days, it was great, my cousins lived behind us and we would all get together and make huge snowmen and tunnels, it is one of my fondest memories. We used to take sleds and go down the large hills that were covered over. I have since moved to North Carolina on the East Coast and we NEVER get snow! It becomes depressing when you see on the news everyone that gets it. When my son was a couple months old, we got about 6 inches and I was so excited, I bundled him up and took him outside and made a snow angel with him because I didn't know when it would snow again and its been 5 years and it has not snowed since!

There was one time when I was about 7 I think that we got a huge snowfall for Arkansas. I think it was about a foot of snow.
There was a huge snowdrift on the south side of our house, so my sister, me, our neighbor's kid and his sister all made tunnels from the side of the house where the snow drift was, behind the house, through our neighbor's yard and back up front. My neighbor's kid lost his sister when one of the snowdrift tunnels caved in. He started bawling his eyes out thinking his dad was going to beat him for losing his sister. She emerged, cold and covered in snow, but okay.
The tunnel idea was abandoned and instead, we made forts. We had a huge snow castle in the front yard, complete with windows and doors just perfect for launching snowballs through. The neighbor across the street let her daughter come out and she and I made a fort on her property, which was across the street from where I lived. We threw snowballs across the street and had a blast.
That was really the only snow I can remember. We've gotten an inch or two here and there, but thank goodness, nothing like that here lately. I'd be forced to call in sick for work.
