my daughter is in pre k. and she has a couple hours of homework each night. it's crazy she even has tests. she has a list of 30 words to memorize every two weeks. she has to count to 50 and recognize the numbers and recongize the letters of the alphabet and today she had a letter sent home that says she needs to learn to write them all. plus she has to memorize a story every two weeks and then little excercises. does any other 4 year old do this much in their school? i find it so much. plus she is english speaking mostly and just started a pure french school so she is still learning the language

Hello and hi my friend.
Let me tell you the homework's function in China. On the one hand the homework is making the students do a lot of exercises after the classes to consolidate the knowledge. The other hand is to limit the students to play after classes. We hope the students could use their majority of time to study but don't let them play.
Good luck.

My son is in Kindergarten and he doesn't get any homework as yet. We do practice the things we were told he needed help on at his first parent-teacher conference a few weeks back.
Your daughters school sounds very tough to me. I hope it gets easier.

Wow, thats alot to learn for a little mind! I think that that is pushing it with the amount. Is she doing allright in terms of learning and her emotional well being? If not maybe you should reconsider the school she is in.

she's doing ok. she just had a test and got a good mark and her report card was good. the only problem the school has with her is how hyper she is and she can't sit still and pay attention. so i find that at home too, sitting her down to listen to me and do her work is frustrating for both of us and i think she needs time to play and burn that energy off instead of always sitting to do homework. but today i've had enough. i can't do it this way anymore. her figitting drives me crazy so i figured out a new way i'm going to do the homework. well some of it anyway. the memorizing words part i'm going to read stories and do games with her for her to learn it. she needed to learn the words manger and everything that goes along with that and christmas words so we put the tree up and we are building a manger. it doesn't seem like hard words to memorize but she is english and she has to memorize these words in french. so anyway i think if i do things my way it might go a little easier it won't feel so much like work and will be more fun for the both of us.

Wow, you live in Canada, correct? Is this typical of their schooling? My son is in kindergarten and doesn't do half that stuff.

yes i'm in canada. it's a french catholic school. it seems like so much homework to me. she never has play time when she comes home from school all she does in homework. i don't know why this school gives out so much and i'm not sure how much the other schools give out around this area but it just seems like a lot for a 4 year old

Yes, it does seem to be quite a lot. In my opinion, a child needs to be a child, not a little adult. But she is your child and if you and your daughter are happy, then that is fine. But I can't see how at four, she could be happy doing a bunch of homework with no time to play. The most my son gets is 4 pages per week and he has them done within 1/2 an hour after he starts..
I don't know much about Catholic French schools, I assume it is a private school and so they probably are harder when it comes to schoolwork, but I can't see it being that much more. Maybe talk to the teacher and see if they allow time for the students at school to do some of their work at school.

I think schools expect too much from kindergarden students , then they want them in school earlier than the older students ...
Then they wonder why kids fall asleep, and don`t want to do work in school, let along homework ...
Maybe you should talk to someone in charge...
Good Luck
Thats way too much for a child
