Is there a difference between deodorant and anti-perspirant?

My favorite is Secret! - secret deodorant

I read one time that anti-perspirant is stronger than deodorant. I haven't had to buy either for a long time because of all the freebies that I've received but do you think there is a difference? Have you ever read the ingredients to see if there really is? Do you have a preference? Have you ever noticed a difference if you have used both?

I definitely notice a difference. I wont' use anything other than anti-perspirant. Deodorant masks the odor and anti-perspirant stops your armpits from sweating so that there isn't a smell. I have never bothered to read the ingredients to see but there is a noticeable difference.

I"m lucky not to be the type who sweats so I have no BO to hide...lol...so I guess deodorant is enough for me.

SOunds like me! I haven't had to buy either in a while! IF it is free, I'm a-takin' it! But I believe the difference is just as the name says - anti perspirant helps you not to perspire and deodarant helps you not to smell. COuld be wrong, but I believe that is it. But then next qeustion is... do they make one that does both? or do you have to use one, then the other? And what happens when one wears off before the other - you smell, but don't perspire, or perspire but don't smell?!!? The question of the ages!!?!?

I haven't used anti-perspirants in ages. They are stronger, with a heck of a lot more chemicals in them that prevent sweating which means they clog up the sweat gland pores...not exactly a great thing, also it's usually anit-perspirants that create that yukky white stain in clothes. To be more conscientious I've switched to Tom's of Maines deodorants that are natural and never test on animals

Agree, natural should be the choice. I use only natural crystals and self made, natural deodorant.

Deodorant basically covers up smell(odor)and antiperspirant is supposed to help you not to perspire or (sweat). For myself, I prefer the antiperspirant variety. However, I have used both. And with both, I have found at some point during the day the need to re-apply. Hope that's helpful.

I just checked my supply and they all seem to say anti perspirant. The funny thing is I'm not the type of person who ever sweats even in the hottest, humidest weather.

Deoderant is a quick, temporary, sweet smelling cover-up for body odor. An anti-persperent is suppose to prevent the possibility of sweating and cause odor. Most of the time you will see these two together in one container.

A deodorant fights odor, a antiperspirant fights wetness.I use a solid that is both a deodorant and antiperspirant. So I am dry and odor free.I never read the labels so I couldn't tell you what is in it.There are many on the market. Suggestion, if you have a KMart, Walmart or Target near you, look there first, they should be cheaper then the supermarket. Good luck.

I know that there is a difference.I have made the mistake before of getting the regular deordrant, and i would sweat and it did not hold me..Anti perspirtant, will block the sweat glands and therefore will help you dry and smelling fresh where as the regular does not..I always get the anti-perspirant, because the other does not work for me.I will smell of BO, after a while , and i do not like that...I have used both and yes there is a great deal of difference in the two...

lol....I'm very lucky because I'm not the body type that sweats so I don't worry about BO as long as I shower regularly.

Hi there my friend, DEODORANTS counteract the formation of unpleasant body odour, they work on controlling the bacterial growth on the skin and so often they cotain perfume to give the skin a nice fragrance, doedorants don't affect the sweating process. ANTI-PERSPIRANT products reduce the amount of sweat to keep the armpit dry and comfortable. The ingredients of the anit-perspirant help also control bacterial growth. I myself use deodorants rather than anti-perspirants. Thank you my friend for you always lovely discussions..

I think anit perprents are more for women where as deoderant is more for men, at least that is what I notice from commercials.

I think there is a difference. Deodorant should be only for covering the smell from sweting and anit-perspirant should avoid the sweating. I used both of them and tell you truth there is not really difference in usage only in theory. I don't really read ingredience between two of them if there is really difference, I more like look for things I don't want this product consist , liek aluminium. Anyway interesing topic, I wonder if other people can feel the difference.

Deodorant covers up and eliminates odors while antiperspirant helps to stop the perspiring in the first place. I always try and get a anti-perspriant and deoderant in one. I find this way I eliminate they sweating, and even if a little does occur I'm covered by scent.

Well everyone has told you the difference. I think part of the difference depends on brand. My mom got me some cheap kind she found at Family Dollar once. It was just deodorant and it was lousy. I don't have a really smelly problem and it still wasn't enough. Plus made me feel sticky under the arms. Any way, most antiperspirants have a deodorant in them to make them smell nice. Of course now we have interesting smells like chi tea and cappuccino.

I think the only difference, ctry, is that anti-perspirants have an extra ingredient for those who sweat more. Some people are heavy perspirers while others are not.

well i think the major difference between deodorant and anti-perspirant is the deo is sweet smeeling and it takes out the odor on the otherhand anti persipirant does not allow to perspire.i am fond of both as well as perfumes also.however i normally use anti perspirant.i prefer to use avon products.
