Pointess tv commercials

Have you ever watched a tv commercial that has nothing to do with the product being advertised? I'm sure you have. These commercials are like mini-movies and must have cost a lot to produce. Yet the message is never clear, and the story-line (when there is one) is unconnected with the product.
Often the commercial is quite entertaining, if not repeated too often. I find I can remember the commercial but rarely would I remember what product it's about.
Isn't that somewhat pointless? Or is it just a case of bad advertising?

Sometimes it's those very same commercials that stick in the mind and then they have achieved their objective. Over the years there have been some amazingly obtuse adverts but the product sticks in the mind simply because the adverts are so wierd or bizarre.
