I visited Sumatra in 1994 on my way around the world. I got a couple of boats and a bus over there from Singapore. The local buses were cramped and very crowded. I stayed my first night in place that ignoring all the motor cycles was like a step back a century. The food there was either rice or noodles, there was no fresh produce in sight. My second night I reached a beautiful town with lovely looking buildings with high pitched roofs. I got a lovely pair of hand made costume dolls. Then I got a bus to a lakeside village and I had a wonderful view of the water from where I stayed. Then I went up to a village in the jungle to see the orangutans. Wow! This was an amazing experience. There are many beautiful islands in Indonesia. I have heard Bali has stunning palm fringed beaches and plenty of tourists. Lombok is meant to be even nicer with fewer tourists. Sumatra is a great place for adventure like caving, swimming in lakes and rivers and seeing wildlife. Good luck choosing where to go and happy travels.
