What do you tell your children about Santa Claus?

When I was about 10 my mother told me there was no Santa. At 10 I will considered old to believe in him still but the only reason I believed in him was my mother told me he was real and I assumed she would never lie to me. So when she told me the truth I was really upset. To this day she still believes that I was so upset because I found out he wasent real but in reality the real reason was I was devastated that my mother lied to me. I have a 3 1/2 year old daughter and a 6 week old baby boy now. I choose to tell my daughter the truth that Santa is not real and is just a story character. The man at the mall is dressed up like santa just like people dress up for Halloween. Its hard when everyone we know pretends there is a Santa and asks her if hes coming to her house. Afterwards I have to explain to her that some people like to pretend Santa is real and I;m sure it confuses her. In front of just adults I explain to them about how I feel but in front of other children I dont say anything because I know most parents want there children to believe there is a santa to keep the magic alive. My daughter is just as excited for Christmas and to see Santa at the mall regardless of the fact that I dont lie to her about the fairytale so I'm really not sure why people feel the need to keep the tradition of telling there children a lie when they can tell them the truth.
