if you do not have a high specs pc and your a home user, the best version would be home basic. if you are a home user and has a more higher specs like a 1gb to 2gb of system memory and a 128mb video memory with pixel shader and T&L you can run Vista Home premium. You can also run Windows Vista Ultimate even if you are a home user provided that you meet it's requirements. in order to run Vista ultimate your PC must have at least meet the minimum of 1gb RAM (2gb or higher recommended), 128mb video memory, 120gb hard disk. I recommend 2gb or higher because Vista is really power hungry especially when aero is loaded.

That depends on what you plan to use it for.
Firstly Home Basic is out of the question unless its all your pc can run. It lacks most of the feature that actually make vista useful. It lacks the Aero eye candy, media center, movie maker and sideshow support
Home Premium is the best choice for home users. It features everything you will need for your daily computing needs. It does lack these features. Dual Cpu support , Remote desktop , Fax and scan.
Vista Business - This will not do anything a home user could need, It lacks media center, movie maker, dvd maker. It does have however better secruity and backup than the other versions except ultimate
Vista ultimate is the cream of the crop.
It will give you access to extras such a Ecrypting file system (EFS) , Advanced back up systems and shadow copies of your files (where the pc makes a copy if you data incase you need to roll back to a pervious copy), Support for dual core cpu's, Full media center and business apps from business Edition, Remote desktop and the ultimate only extra's: these include so far dream scene (video wallpaper for your desktop) Texas hold'em game. Language packs for over 35 different languages
If money is no issue these is the verison to get, else a copy of vista home premium will do the trick. You should wait till after feburary though as they are releasing service pack one (which wil lbe about 4 - 6 gbs to download) which will some of the issue that currently cause problems for users of vista!

Just try first the Windows Vista Professional 32 bit of 64 bit Edition. It has a lot of great feature that you can use in your job and personal lifestyles. Sometime I use this but I go back to Windows XP, because it is a user friendly operating system software.
