How important is a foreign language in your life ?

Most of my friends and I began to learn a foreign language when we were teenagers.At that time, we didn't understand why.After graduation from university,some of us who want to pursue PHD degree still need to take a foreign language proficiency test.In the meantime,those who work in totally native speaker environment also are required to certificate it.In my country,there are so people forced to study a foreign language which they regard it useless for themselves.
What do you think the importance of a foreign language in your life?Is it indispensable or useless?
