My Dad raises these beautiful cows up North. They are called Scottish Highlander's and obviously have some rather unusual horns (at least I've never seen any like that). This one is his Bull and he's full grown. There's a pic of the calf (this is the daddy to it) in my photo section. My sister is sending me a pic of the female (mama to the calf). The only problem is this one is about to go into his freezer...I know, I know that's what most ppl raise cattle for...but I could never do it. I love animals too much. Anyways, I just had to share these adorable animals with everyone. Do you raise any special animals...or have pet/animal pics to share? MERRY CHRISTMAS!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

I happen to keep wolfdogs myself. You can see their pics on my profile. I'm hoping to eventually have some of those highland cattle myself as soon as finances & fencing come available.

He is a cute calf sad to say he going somewhere else :(. We used to have 10 cows. I usually bring them to grasslands then before nightfall I get them back to their fences. I sometimes ride on them too. I remember I cried so hard when one of the bulls was sold for its meat. I was upset then coz I was tending to them. Well kids can't realize those things though. I named that bull Rudolph after one of Santa's reindeer since he got a red nose. :(

I love cows, we use to raise some when we lived in Prairie Hill Texas..These cows of your Dads are really nice, thank you for sharing.Oh yes the "freezer"even though that sounds bad, that is why you raise cows, they were made for us humans to eat,but no i could not kill one, but we have had a few killed in the past for beef.I do not raise any type of animals anymore..I only have pets, a parrot, a dog,and two cats,\.

I was born and raised in Scotland where these Highland cattle abound, and I must admit, they are quite unusual! They need all that hair to keep them warm in the harsh Scottish winters! Shame he will end up in the pot.

He's cute and furry. I didn't think they had fur - call me slow 'n stupid LOL! Too bad he's going to be part of the food chain :( I love animals but I must say I only like the cute ones. I don't like rodents, reptiles, insects (that's all I remember off hand)...except occasionally I will see mice and gerbils in a pet shop and think they're cute too. Right now we have a German shepherd, a cat, a beta fish but in the past we've also had finches, canaries, lots of fish, rabbits, a Labrador-white shepherd, lizards (but I don't remember what kind) YUCK and our daughter also had a tarantula double YUCK! We adopted animals for our kids depending on what they wanted at the time and then hubby and I end up taking care of them forever. I'll add pics later because I seem unable to add any to my reply.

Love the picture. I've always liked cows, ever since I was a kid. I have family up in New England and their town hosts a "Strolling of the Heifers" parade each summer, with real cows walking down the street as well as people dressed in cow costumes, etc. It's a really fun occasion and a tribute to the area's dairy farming heritage (which is sadly shrinking by the year).

That's why if I was ever to raise animals for our own use, I would never name them or handle them too much. Once I get attached to an animal, I can't possibly kill it let alone eat it. I want to have a small flock of chickens to provide us with eggs and meat but never can find the money to build a proper coop for them. We do, however, have a dog house that is no longer in use that we could possibly make a lil bigger to house 5 chickens but then I would still have to build a pen for them. The coop and pen both will have to be portable so as I can move it every day for the chickens to have access to fresh greens and bugs. Once we can buy the acre surrounding us, I would also want to get a Jersey cow for milk or maybe an angus steer to raise for meat.

Reggie Cat in the Garland - My silly kitty discovered the box and garland and likes to go and hide in it now!
When I was a kid I used to want to live on a farm. Except I knew I could never kill the animals and I'd be a horrible farmer. Very cute! I guess I could share my christmasy kitty picture! He found the box of garland in my closet. He like to sleep in it! or play "monster cat" where he hides under it and then jumps out to attack me when I get too close. ha ha.

How cute! I've never seen a furry one before, awwww. I'm with you, I couldn't do it either. I've tried to buy organic meat from a farm before but I just can't look at something in the face and then be like "awwww, this one is cute.. kill it". I have to go the regular market route where my meat is faceless, lol. It all comes from my childhood, lol, I had a baby chick that grew up to be a rooster and of course you can't have a rooster in the city so it went to live at my aunt's house. I was 4 and loved him so much, I would walk it and play with it... the whole 9 yards. Well my cousin's each had a chicken (we got the chicks at the same time) and everyone used to say how beautiful my rooster was and never mention the chickens. So one day my aunts calls us all to dinner, makes a big deal about serving me soup and that I eat it, I hated soup as a little girl, but I ate it. Then she laughs and gets this big smile and told me I'd eaten my "beautiful" rooster. She always had this thing about her two daughters being soooooo perfect and pretty and me being so not perfect because my mom was a single mom so she hated whenever anything I did or had was better than her daughters'. To this day I hate live chickens or the taste of fresh killed chicken. It taught me karma though, her "perfect daughters" grew up to be spoiled brats who turned their back on their parents and left them penniless and almost homeless while they bought brand new homes themselves and would not let their parents stay. Way off topic I know, lol.

Very cute. I know what you mean by not wanting them to end up on a plate, but that's what cattle are usually raised for. i have worked in agriculture and have had to say goodbye to many a favoured animal. I got over it by bonding with the next lot.

He is so cute. I love animals, the Jersey cows are really cute too. My husband and I saw field of cows at a dairy one time. We pulled over got out of the car, then we started mooing at the cows. It was so much fun and cute. They all came over to see the strange looking cows. They would tilt their head to side to side. I wish I could know what they were thinking, hehe. I love talking to the animals in their "language".

I don't think that I want to see a picture of any animal that is about to become dinner soon. I have you on my identify list, so I don't have to actually look at it. I know that this sounds a little silly, but it would probably hurt my heart.

He most certainly is! I don't think I've ever seen so much fluff on a bull before. It makes him look kind of exotic! Is he as sweet as he looks? I've owned chickens, ducks, a turkey, and a horse. That's about it for non traditional type animals. I've never eaten any of these pets, except for chicken eggs, as I have no interest in killing my own food. Now I just stick with regular pets like dogs, cats (though I don't have any at the moment), birds, and fish. :)

I have never seen this breed of cattle before. Does the flavor of the meet taste any differently? I would guess they would be very expensive since they are rare in the USA. Great job with the photo

In my view this is the kind of discussion that makes myLot simply Utopian! Thank you so much for sharing. Someday I will get very brave and industrious and dig out a picture that was taken of me with 2 baby goats (yes, kids!) when I was a toddler. I used to feed them out of baby bottles we manufacturer at home by putting a sucking apparatus on top of a sterilized pop bottle. Dunno which was more fun, feeding the goats or getting to drink the pop! It wasn't something we got every day, as dirt farmers in those days fed the animals first and ate what was left over.
