Will You Still Be Going to Malls?

I know there will be those who say we'd be wrong to be afraid to go to shopping malls now, especially after the Omaha shootings the other day, but how do you feel? I know it's wrong to live in fear and that we can't just hide away in a cave or something, but I must admit it worries me. It seems to be a horrifying new trend with four shootings at malls in the past year! I'm not near any major city so the malls near me would certainly not seem to pose any danger but who would have thought any of those where the shootings took place did either? As I said, I know some of you will disagree with me and say I'm crazy and on most issues I'd probably say the same thing - I know there are plane crashes but I'm not afraid to fly and I didn't hesitate in taking my grandkids on vacation on a plane several times - but for some reason this is hitting me in a different way. Who feels like I do and who won't change your lifestyle one bit? Annie

I've been to Trolley Square Mall since the shooting, I'd go to that mall in Omaha if I had the chance. The location of a crime isn't tainted by the crime itself.

I realize that and I really feel bad for the mall and store owners there because it was certainly no fault of theirs. Refresh my memory, where is the Trolley Square Mall again? As I said in another post, when it comes right down to it I wouldn't change any plans because of these events but it does give us something new to worry about, if we're inclined to worry...lol. I try not to, really I do! Annie

There have been so many mall shootings, why would this one in particular stop anyone from going to the mall. If you are worried about being shot, then you shouldn't probably leave you house. Even then, in some bad neighborhoods, you can get shot in your home! This time of year any place you go and buy something puts a big target on your back, does that stop anyone from shopping at any store? I think people who say that they will not go to malls anymore are being very paranoid.

How far should security have to go? Personally, I do not go to malls often, maybe once to twice a year. I do run into a store attached to a mall (like Sear or Target) but do not go into the mall itself quite often. The malls are such a huge pain and inconvenience to go to as it is, if they had security measure that would hold me up in any way shape or form, I would never go into them.

No bad guy, terrorist or otherwise, is going to stop me from going to the Mall. I do not care if they have an arsenal there, if their intentions are to keep people in their homes huddled like frightened animals, I will not fall prey to their cowardly dictatorship. Come on now! It's getting near Christmas. We have a duty to buy presents and see the sights. So I will still go to the Mall.

Yes, but I'll be taking a concealed pistol in case some punk wants to make my day. Just kidding. Really, I have not considered changing my plans at all due to these mall shootings. Never occurred to me until I read your post. What are the chances? You're more likely be killed in a car crash on the way to the mall.

You're so right and now that a little more time has passed I'm thinking much more rationally about it. Really, I never meant to say I'd never go to a mall again but I guess it's just something to think about, how so many things have happened to a large number of people who were just doing normal, everyday things. I and others here have mentioned flying and the fact is my family and I were on our way to the airport a couple years ago and saw an accident that had happened just minutes before we got to it on the turnpike where there were several fatalities. That made my son-in-law see things a bit more clearly since he's one of those with a huge fear of flying! Annie

I do have a somewhat irrational fear of flying, however. Something about being so totally out of control. I guess I imagine I might be able to take some evasive action in a car accident; but in a plane, you're pretty much done if it crashes. And it just don't feel right to be soaring 30 K ft in the air, locked in tin can. Still, I'm not afeared enough not to fly.

Whenever something happens, and it is fresh in our minds, we tend to focus on it more. The mall is, by and large, a safe place. You are more likely to get into an accident on the way to or from the mall than to get shot while you are there. But I understand the feeling. When it is fresh in your mind, when it happens a few times, close enough together to start to feel like a trend, it makes us worry. But I will not live in fear. Would you keep your children home from school? There have been more school shootings than mall shootings, and each incident seems to be more deadly. Will you stop driving because there are lots of accidents? Will you stop living your life? There are train accidents, bus crashes, plane crashes and shootings. You could be exposed to lead, smoke, smog, pollution, carcinogens, but life must go on.

i will still be going to malls. i'm not going to let this stop me. if something happens then it happens. i believe that everything happens for a reason and everyone has a time to go and whenever that time is it's going to happen whether it's by being shot in a mall, dying in a terror-induced plane crash or dying at home in your sleep or something.

We can't allow ourselves to live in fear or we'd never go outside our own homes. We can't let the crazy people out there discourage us from living our lives, because then they'd win. I ride in cars when an accident could kill me. I fly on airplanes even though they crash. I teach school even though there have been school shootings. And I will continue shopping anywhere I choose, including malls.

I honestly dont know about these shootings you mentioned BUT I dont watch the news or read the paper so its no wonder..I knew there were shootings recently BUT I dont know any of the details and for some reason I thought it was at a school... In any case, things like that dont affect how I live..My attitude is this, if I'm going to die, I'm going to die end of story....There is nothing I can do to stop it so why let tragedies rule me ya know...If by some off chance I were to walk into a mall and get shot or go to the school to pick up my kids and get blown up or hop on a plane and have it crash etc etc there isnt a damn thing I can do to stop it, change it, prevent it and so on so why stress over it...

I will still go to malls especially my favorite mall. But I know what you mean about it now being dangerous.I have three malls within driving distance of my home. The first one is just up the street. It wanted to be a great place for everyone But teens. There are strict rules and teens are followed. Needless to say, the mall is usually half empty. The second nearest mall was my favorite for a while. It was the one I went to when I was a teen. It was for teens and it was bigger. But now it has had robberies, and last week it caught on fire.I haven't been there ina long time because of my favorite mall now. It is further wawy from home but it is huge. You could put the other malls I wrote about inside this mall. It is really for everyone.Young and old. There is security but you don't feel like you are in a police state like the first mall and you don't feel like something bad will happen like the second mall.It is newer than the others so maybe that is why.

You know, I was just at a major mall near us on Friday, and not one time did I think about this! So I guess it won't effect me too much. I see what your saying about having a fear of this. I mean when your walking around a mall, there are so many people and your not really paying attention to them, there's just too many people to keep up with. Anyone could do this really. I guess now they are going to have security officers at all the entrances of Malls across America scanning people for weapons? The future is looking really scary just in this aspect. It's unreal Annie! So saddening too. Bay Lay Gray xx

I just started a discussion about the very recent shooting incidents in Colorado. Although they were not in malls, the trend of shootings in public places seems to be on the rise. It's such a sad and senseless situation, but one just has to live as normally as possible, but taking some extra precautions (if possible).

Well I haven't been to a shopping mall in awhile..no fun when you don't have money to spend..LOL Okay..seriously though. It's really true that we can't live in fear of any possible terroristic attacks, whether it be from a troubled teenage youth who went beserk to a full scale terror attack like 911. A terroristic attack can occur anywhere..the mall, the subway, university campus grounds, while walking on the street, movie theatre..anywhere when you think of it--of course, I think from now on, people might get jumpy if they hear anything that even slightly resembles a gunshot now in shopping malls..

I was just about to bring up the plane crash thing. There are hundreds of flights every day out of the Memphis Airport. There are probably thousands of flights every day across America and rarely does one crash. There are thousands of malls in America and for the most part, nothing happens other than a few shoplifters. So yes, I'd still go to a mall. And yes, I'd still fly on a plane. Flying is way safer than driving. Car wrecks happen every minute of every day of every year. Airplane crashes rarely happen.

I will continue to live my life the way I feel like it. There is not one thing that will happen in this world that will stop me from going some where or eating at a particular place. I believe if I was meant to die a certain way then hey so be it. I will still shop at the malls and probally wont be the one who gets shot because I watch what I say to people now a days.

Allow yourself to be somewhat ignorant to these events. I mean, they tell you about all of the shopping trips gone wrong, but they never have news coverage of all the mall trips in which nothing out of the ordinary has happened. It's just that, normal mall trips are not very exciting. The chances of getting shot are one in a million. Of course, try not to go into a forest in the middle of the night or anything that sounds obviously dangerous, but you have to risk life or it won't be worth living anyway.
