For the holiday a big group of our friends and my family are going camping. It would be the first time for all of us. We dont want to have to pack and unpack for 5 hours but none of us know what we should take with us and what is that we can live without. We are going to be near shops, it is summer, we have kids (most of them are under 5) and we are staying for 5 nights. We are going to stay at a caravan camping park sort of thing. any ideas and recomendations?

When we go camping, we always se tents, so we make sure we have plenty of blankets, even in the summer, if you're in the mountains, it gets cold at night. (we always camp in the North Georgia Mountains). The blankets are also extra padding on the ground, if it's cold and you use an air mattress, the air in it gets cold too, and you freeze, so we just use the blankets. We take a couple of pots and pans for cooking, and dishes, it's easy to wash them, and better than throwing away plastic and styrofoam. We found it's better to take our food with us, when you go other places, they food brands may be different and it may cost more. Especially if the children like only certain foods, you may not be able to find it somewhere else. Make sure you have enough to keep the children entertained. Keep snacks and drinks handy for them too. We always bring our own toilet paper too, even if they have facilities there, you never know if they'll have toilet paper. Well, I hope that's a start for you.

I read one of the responses here and in your comment yous ay your going in January. Boy, I wish I lived in a city that we could go camping in January. I guess this means you can go camping all year round. Lucky you. We only have a few short months that we get to go camping. We can go from June to September. We go on the weekends most of the time and then we go for a week. We take our camper most of the time so everything we need is in it already. We make sure we have lots of blankets and clothes and food and water.

yes there were suposed to be 4 kids that are 4 years old 1 was 2 years old, 1 is 6 and 1 is 8 but now 2 of the kids are not coming the 4 and 2 year old as they will have people over from out of town. We all have our own tents (as in each family has its own) we are going to limit the junk food and take lots of fruits and vegetables (I made a great deal with the local farmers and we are going to have huge quantity delivered to my house) watermelon is a must

Thnks darl I am hoping we will have a great time. I always wanted to go camping but could not find anyone to go with. We went out to picnik yesterday and we all said how wonderfull it will be if we went so we went home and had a look on the net and booked a place. The kids cant wait as they are mostly under 5 (well 4,4,4,4,2,6,8) years old and they love each other and as long as there is a playground for the kids, pool for the mothers and somewhere to fish for the man we are all happy. I will send you a postcard.

How did I miss your answer I have no idea. Sorry. For first time I am not brave enough to go where there is no electricity, water, toilets that sort of things and I think the kids will deive us crazy. This way they have things to do.

When you say that you are going camping... I take that you mean in a tent.
The success of camping is to be prepare for any kind of weather. That means plenty of ropes in case it is windy and plenty of plastic tarpaulins in case it rains. There is nothing worse than being wet and everything being wet when you are camping.
The tarpaulins can also be used to provide shade... providing that you have some poles to put a canape up in the air. Telescopic poles are the best. You also need an extra pack of pegs... strong metal ones... for your extra ropes. Elastics like those used to tie up things on a roof rack are better than ropes as they don't get loose in the wind.
For 25 years... all my holidays were camping holidays. I camped in dozen of locations from Melbourne to Cairns... in all kind of weather.
I had a full trailer of camping equipment. I would setup for the worse... and then I could relax... no matter what did happen.
I don't know of your situation. If you have never been camping... does that mean that you have no camping equipment? What kind of tent will you have?If you have no experience with this and a bunch of kids under 5... it will probably be a nightmare... but I hope not for your sake. Camping is an art... like everything else. It takes practice to get good at it.
You also need a gas stove and some gas lights... unless you are getting a powered site. But electrics and rain don't mix very well.
It is also handy to have a couple of plastic jerricans to store water... so that you don't have to go and fetch water every five minutes.
You need an ice box. Chairs and table are optional. All depends how much confort you want. Don't forget to take a couple of torches with you.

We are going camping as in tent. Only 1 family has a tent but we are going to buy one and so will the rest in the group. We got sleeping bags and we are going to buy the air mattresses. Most of the man in the group have gone camping but not in australia. We have lots of ropes for extra security. The pwner of the camp side said the people there will help us set up. What we dont have we will buy or borrow for now.
