How does page rank work?

I signed up for blog tracker. Yesterday it said my rank was 1761, today it says 1423. Which is better? What exactly does the # mean? Thanks.

Its your rank based on traffic against all those registered, #1 is the best you can be.

Guess they are looking at the traffic comming to your site - so a high rank is always better :-)
