What about XActive?

My brand new computer (April) had to go in for repairs a couple of weeks ago. Just got it back. They put in a new motherboard.... a totally different motherboard. It's like having a whole different computer. It's supposed to be a better motherboard but I miss some of the features I had before. If there was a way to activate them I would, but I don't. One of the things that is bothering me is that I can't play any of the games I played before. They say I need to install XActive. When I click on more information Microsoft warns that it is not a good idea. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this? Should I download XActive or do without my precious games?

I assume you're talking about ActiveX controls. First, I recommend you install SiteAdvisor on your computer (works with Internet Explorer and Firefox): http://www.siteadvisor.com/ If SiteAdvisor is green when you navigate to where this game is, it's mostly likely safe to install the ActiveX control.

My brother builds computers. I have asked him about this as it appears on my screen sometimes asking me to download it. His says to stay away from it. It will just mess things up. I don't download stuff that I don't trust because he is no longer within easy reach to fix what I mess up. There are games out there that don't require the XActive or Active X as I've seen it. My advice is to stay away from it.

Can you explain to me why, then, I didn't have this happening on the other computers? Why was I able to play these games without this stupid message popping up on this machine with the old motherboard, and on my old machine?
