Are You A Good Leader?

Do you have leadership skills? What community/school etc groups have you led? What qualities do you value in leaders (others and yourself)? I've captained sporting teams that I have been a part of, I am in the Student Representative Council at my school, and I am a natural leader amongst my friends. I think that a few things that make a great leader of people is service above self, and making decisions based on the greater good (not always doing what YOU want, but what will serve the majority best). Respect for others voice, opinions and suggestions. Negotiating skills and the ability to compromise to find the best solution to a problem. Initiative and innovative ideas. Motivation. I think these are the basic foundations on which great leaders grow - either leaders of nations, communities or even your local scouts. =D What do you think about leadership? Mal.

I can easily lead or follow... It depends on the personalities of the people around me. If I'm with people that have really strong personality I tend to shrink into the background, but other times with people that perhaps aren't quite as out there, I'll find myself leading. Also depends on what I'm doing. Obviously I'm more likely to leading if I know what I'm doing and I'm confident that I can do it. The first example that springs to mind is a jam session with my musical friends :)

That's very true. Strength of personality definitely comes into the mix, and comfort in the situation. I could lead a kitchen or tattoo shop or student council, and I could give my opinions in other situations, but I'd leave the majority of the leading and organising up to someone else who was more experienced in that area. =)

Yes exactly. Although a lot of the time I'm just outshined by people with stronger personalities than me, but I guess that just gives me a chance to sit back and watch... which can also be a great thing...

I have been told that I'm a good leader. I'm not sure what that means. I do know that as long as I have people in my charge, it is my responsibility to take care of them. I have to take care f them whether they want me to or not. I have spent a lot of time learning to be a better leader, but I have come away with one solid truth. To be a better leader, you first have to be a better servant.
