Prenatal vitamins - are they worth the price tag?

Folic acid supplements are recommended until you reach 12 weeks... but after that, are/did you bother taking prenatal vitamins? I'm currently taking Pregnacare Plus - they contain omega 3, etc... but I find them very expensive! Are they really worth the price tag when you have a balanced diet already? To be honest I think I just take them for my conscience!

Personally, I would take them or a similar vitamin that has the same amount of folic acid, iron and the Omega 3. All 3 are very vital to the health of your baby. I would definitely not cut out the Omega 3 as current research has shown that Omega 3 helps brain and eye development in babies in the womb (this is the only time in our lives that Omega 3 can do this).

I did read loads of good things about taking Omega 3 during pregnancy (but they have to be prenatal for dosage, etc...)that's why I went for the more expensive vitamins that contained them. I do still eat about one to two salmons steaks a week though so I'm not sure this is really necessary for me...?

Omega 3 is important for your body as well. Even if you eat a 100% balanced diet it is not easy getting the iron and calcium. If you eat a very healthy diet and do not get the right leafy green vegetable, then odds are you are no getting enough calcium. If you do not get your recommended dosage for any of the vitamins and minerals in your diet, you are robbing your body of vital nutrients you need even if you were not pregnant.

Yes they are worth the pricetag, my best didn't take them and her daughter was born with an split spine, due to the lack of vitamines she took. And yes she had a very balanced diet, but you can't get enough of everything through eating!

Folic Acid is actually recommended before pregnancy & until the very end of the pregnancy (or so my bottles have told me). Honestly, i have only had 1 pregnancy & have just started a new on - i think we paid about $6 Australian for a bottle of folic acid, which has 100 tablets in it, i only have to take one a day so i really don't see them as being expensive anyway. In the end it may cost me a total of about $18 Australian for these pills but i really don't think that's expensive AT ALL. I also don't think spending that $18 in 9-10 months is bad - if i can prevent Spina Bifida then i'm all for spending it. I believe my unborn child is worth the effort & expense!

I have 2 very healthy children and I did not take my prenatal vitamins. They made me throw up no matter when I took them. My doctor told me to take 2 chewable children's vitamins instead. I could take those without throwing up.

the folic acid is good for brain development and to prevent abnormalities like cleft lip and palate, meningoceles, spina bifida, etc. It also helps prevent alzheimer's disease, and progression of certain cancers
