What is the big deal with cats and Christmas Trees? I have presents under our tree and last night, I heard the cat sharpen her claws. This morning, the cat was in the Christmas tree and I found what she was sharpening her claws on! It was the gifts. What is the lure of Christmas trees and gifts to cats? Does you cat do these strange things??

Cats and Christmas trees, I have the same thing going on at my house. The mamma cat even was teaching her kittens how to climb into the tree. I used to have a big dog that loved sleeping under the tree. One year she was sleeping, she decided to stand up. I was close, I saw that the tree was getting ready to topple over. I reached out to grab it, I grab the top, the bottom came off. Needless to say we had a funny looking tree. We did put it back together but with it coming apart after it was decorated, it sort of took a beating, hehe. Oh well, I don't get too pressed about having a perfect tree. We did our best to make the tree indistructable. We have the bulbs twist tied on the tree, they are not coming off. Last year the cats kept getting the bulbs off the tree and batting them around.

Last year we had a problem with our cats taking the bulbs out of the electric lights. We purchased a different kind this year and they cant get them out. LOL

My cats get so upset with us when we put the gifts under the tree. This year we are waiting until Christmas eve. Our grandson is now living with us and we want to have him completely surprised on Christmas day. The cats will be able to sleep under the tree until that time. One in particular is quite fond of the tree skirt and has claimed it for her own bed.

We have an eight month old kitten and he loves going after the gingerbread people that were made at school and my son bought last year at the craft sale.
My severely autistic son wanted to climb the tree and this is the first time that has happened and he is 11.
I have not placed presents under there yet, will wait another week.

LOL, one year our two cats took bites (and spit them out) of every single gingerbread man on our tree. We had made them and put names on each one. They were darling til Big Guy and Baby had a blast with them overnight. I don't know how they kept from tipping that tree over. Both cats were 20 lbs. plus!

Dangly things, shiny things... They're worse than catnip to them.
I've had to hang all our decorations well out of kitty reach. I only have a mini tree anyway, but it's on top of the DVD shelves! I've caught them chewing on ribbons and tinsel twice already. It's a nightmare!

Talking about this has reminded me, you may find this comic strip amusing:

Hello villageanne. Our cats like to play with the christmas decorations on the christmas tree. It drives my mom crazy whenever they do that. Sometimes you could even see the decorations on the floor.

I ended up not for a long while not having a christmas tree. When I did I managed to keep Luna off it but every now and then a water bottle to spray her away.. never kept presents under the three kept them up where she couldnt get it in the closet.

I have no problems with the cats and a live tree. It is the dog who keep gulping the water at the base and chewing on the branches. She goes for a walk under the tree knocking off millions of short needles and covering her back with them. This dog is so lovable but she can be quite nutty at times...lol.

I discovered my roommate's cat climbing the tree this afternoon. I assume the reason it was toppled when I got home from work was probably because he climbed it this morning, too.
I think they view it as this great big toy. It drives me nuts though. He broke 3 of my glass ornaments, and I'm afraid he'll break more if he keeps it up. My cat never tried to climb it as a kitten, so I'm not even sure what to do to break him of the habit. Maybe tell my roommate to play with her cat more?

OMG I'm not the only person who's experiencing this!
Well that's good to know, but I can't explain it, I'm sorry.
My friend's cat had a litter of four 5 weeks ago (and I should be getting my first kitty from this litter =D), and I was there last week and the kittens just couldn't get enough of the tree and presents.
2 of them actually refused to sleep anywhere other than on top of the uncomfortable boxed and wrapped presents and very much enjoyed scratching and nibbling on them, as well as attempting to pull off all of the decorations =P
