Liz Dawn, the multi talented singer and actress who has made us laugh and cry for more than 30 years,is to be written out of Corrie in the new year because she is very ill in real life, suffering with emphysema.
I am so sad about this and apparently she will be written out as a death, so I shall probably howl the house down. Bill Tarmey, who plays her husband will probably not have to act much, as he is losing a good friend and a superb comedienne with whom he has performed a music hall double act in the Street.
You have been warned, stock up on those tissues!

I have to agree this is so sad, Vera duckworth(played by Liz Dawn) is such a great charecter. Many of us know of couples in real life just like Jack and Vera, and it is just such a shame that Liz is so ill,but at least we have all the back shows of Jack and Vera at their finest to look back on...All the best to both Bill Tarmey, and Liz Dawn for the future you will be missed. I have my tissues ready...

I know, did you watch the episode? It was done so well, and so understated that it was all the more choking. Liz and Bill were a great double act and their comic timing was something which enhanced their performances.
I notice that the young bookmaker and Blanche have started a love/hate relationship and that is a very good double act, surprisingly so since one of the characters is new. I wondered if this was being built up to help to compensate for losing Liz.
I suppose from her point of view it empowered her in that she left whilst she was still capable of giving a first class performance.
I know I have felt very sad during the bereavement scenes. I think the actress who plays Molly is very good too.

Sorry I took so long to reply, has been hectic here.
Yes, the scenes were sad but brilliantly understated and the way eerything just "stopped" is very like how it happens in real life. You are just so stunned.
I think it is a shame Jack hasn't been given more stories butI agree Blanche and Dan are a great duo. Dan seems not to be on screen at the moment but I hope that one continues. Blanche, however, is a great character to watch, I wouldn't want to live next door to her though lol.

Hi Shelagh,
The acting of Bill Tarmey at the loss of Vera has been so moving, you can feel his loss, all the more poignant as we know that Liz Dawn is very ill in real life.
The acting and the way it is being dealt with by all the cast(apart from the young man who plays the grandson...Get the lad some extra acting lessons soon please producers....lol) has been excellent in my view. Goodbye Vera you will be missed...
I also like the new pairing of Blanche and the young bookmaker I hope it carries on.

AAAw I am so upset to hear about this. I love Vera and Jack. He is really going to be so lost without her. It's so sad how they have lost alot of their vets lately. And just when Molly and Tyrone are set to 'leave the nest' too. This will be devasting for them and allon the Street and who watch it too.

Well we have been without Vera for some time now and unfortunately that also seems to mean we are without Jack which is a huge shame since he is a fine actor whilst some of the regulars are, let us put it kindly, rather "hammy".

There is a good write up about this on the official page for the Soap
http://www.itv.com/Soaps/default.html
I think you may enjoy a quick browse, it tells you about Emmerdale, another programme I write about too.
This character has been in the programme for 34 years and I have watched the programme all my life, so it is a little bit like an old friend passing but it IS only fiction.
In the event they did it very well, she just came home from a lovely day out and went to sleep.
