What to do to lose weight when it does not look like its working.

I was wondering how other people here handle losing in weight in winter. I am not talking about it being around zero or there is a light snow on the ground, I am talking about being really cold, like the wind chill is up, and if you start to walk about a few minutes, you feel the cold and you cannot go out with a light coat and get adapted. I have shoveled snow, I have walked to the MALL that is almost a mile and back, but unlike the other seasons, I cannot walk outside everyday because it takes longer than I would have had there been no snow. I have done weight lifting, and also walk up and down the stairs, and did a little treadmilling, but that does not seem to help, at least acccording to my husband. I am just too large boned and even if I lost more inches, I still look the same. Anyone relate to this?

I can totally relate. I was too thin - like I lost my period, and the hair on my arms and legs (almost blonde then) got darker due to vastly decreased body fat - at 115-120 lbs when for many this is an ideal weight. In certain clothes - like long skirts, which I like - or certain pants - I still looked large. I think I'm smallish boned though but my hips - the bones are spread out wide. Also, I'm all legs and I go from hip bone to ribs so even when thin, I looked a bit formless like people who are heavier. Did you know many malls open early - not the stores but the building itself so you can walk around - for those who like to excercise? I like weightlifting and I'm glad to see you're not afraid of it because when you build muscles (not a guy - it would take a lot anyway for that) you burn fat watching tv - or in your case - reading. Be sure to eat plenty of clean proteins though as they feed the muscles and drink plenty of water when excercises to take out all the lactic acid - the muscles waste products. If you walk up and down your stairs - that's great, but its optimal to have sustained movement for 20 minutes (when just starting) and to keep your heart rate up. Oh and stretching - afterwards - when muscles are warm - not only decreases the chance of injury and soreness but it aids in weight loss. What about something fun like Curves? They often have specials where there is no initial membership fee - if you bring in a bag of food for the needy. I love swimming and miss having an indoor pool like we used to at our old apartment complex. I'm losing some weight nursing - and believe it or not - only lose weight when I go above 1500 calories - otherwise since it burns so many calories I go into starvation mode. I guess that's not an option though. ITs hard anyway. Personally, I think the best thing is to find someone to work out with. Get a walking tape - or dvd - and walk indoors, or aerobics or dance if that's what you want. And see if you can enlist a friend from church. Isn't there a weigh low diet - a religious type thing? Also, check out - Eat Right for Your Blood Type - and Cook Right for Your Blood Type, we actually learned about the author in school in our Anatomy and Physiology classes. Apparently each blood type has certain food that are good for the body - its funny - haven't started following it yet - but the ailments that go along with my blood type are spot on! You're likely not type A blood. I bet you actually need plenty of meat. Hey do you have any good chicken recipes - yummy ones that you've had yourself - or any meat - for a beginner? I need to eat more protein - since I'm nursing - I eat hardly any - I started a thread on it but only two people responded with good recipes. May have to go out and buy some cookbooks but that will have to wait. And of course, one last tip - water water everywhere. WAter actually does help you lose weight! Oh wait - and massage if you're comfortable with it - especially massage therapy that includes lymphatic drainage(get out all the fat you've burned and moving out lactic acid). While it can't take off lbs it can aid your program in other ways - increasing circulation (speeding up metabolic rate), increases flexibility, preventing injury - but most of all this and all things that relax you, reduce stress. And as that annoying but true commercial says, stress causes belly fat - when stressed the brain tells the body to produce cortizal to deal with the stress which increases belly fat. So believe it or not, curling up with your bible or your favourite book, or working on an art project (your book) can actually help you lose weight. Okay I've rambled enough.

I laughed at the massage parlour thing - although you were serious. Yes there is a stigma against massage therapy although its a legitamate form of therapy. Many work in chiroprators office - they go hand in hand or at physical therapy places. I think massage parlours are only found in seedy parts of town and those masseuses (I'm not a masseusse but a massage therapist) aren't subject to the very rigid standards of our Massage Therapy national regulating authority. If you get someone certified - you know they went through intense schooling that included many difficult anatomy and physiology classes, nutrition classes, business, ethics and more. The test to get licensed is brutal too. Each year therapist have to do continuing education as well. I am going to use my training hand in hand with movement therapy, counseling, coaching and relaxation technique training.

Oh and if you're at a true plateau, I can give you some of the plateau breakers I gave to my clients - or I can tell you how to jumpstart a healthy eating/excercise program if you'd like.

It is hard to stay active in winter. Is there someplace you can go to at least walk indoors, the mall, maybe. Or maybe you could get a workout video, or jump rope indoors, if there's room. You could also get the kind of weights that strap around your wrists and ankles to increase resistance so a little workout does more. I'm a little concerned here. This is the second discussion of yours that I've read involving weight loss, and both times you mention how your husband feels about it, but not that You think you need to lose weight. Is he pressuring you? If he is tell him to back off, the pressure can make it harder to be successful. If you naturally have a bigger bone structure, you may well be at a healthy weight. Have you talked with your doctor about whether you need to lose some to be healthy?

I do not feel tired or exhausted, and my husband cannot understand that I cannot lose as much as he would want me to. I am a mesomorph as well so that makes a difference. I do think he should back off and I did tell him that if I eat less, my metabolism will slow down and it will be worse than if I eat more. I do go to the Mall, but I remember that in summer, I had to walk at least 45 minutes to see any effects. I also see how heavier people are here in Winnipeg, compared to what they were back in British Columbia. I also understand that to lose weight, it might cost more money and I have added more fiber to my diet. It does not bother to the extent that my husband thinks it does. I do not want to starve myself and go without any fat or oils. I will look into getting those weights. Now if there was a type of exercise I could do while sitting and myLotting.

I'm glad to see you don't want to starve yourself - that would likely backfire anyway as your body would shut down and go into starvation mode - and any calories you did take in would be more likely to stored as fat. Our bodies are "efficient" in that way. In fact, if you go too low too soon this can happen as well. What oils do you use - that could be a start. Olive Oil is one of the healthiest. I always recommened Brummel and Browns yogurt butter - I hate yogurt so I resisted this for myself - but its actually yummy - there are less expensive ones with no trans fat though. I actually got over my yogurt thing - by freezing it - its mostly the texture. They have yogurts with the digestive enzymes/active cultures we need to process food efficiently and reduce bloating. And what most don't know - dairy products - milk, yogurt, cheese aids in weight loss. http://www.florida-agriculture.com/foodprograms/calcium.htm You know I was wondering if you've been checked for underactive thyroid - there is a quick test they do and a more comprehensive test. And if you're on any anti-depressants or anti-anxiety - sometimes those result in weight gain and difficulty losing weight.

I should drink more milk, but I get phlegm. I do use yogurt, but usually it is only a quarter a cup a day so I should increase it. I make skim milk, but it seems to watery.

when ya cant walk outside ya just cant. If I had stairs that would be the one way I would go when not being outside to walk around . and would keepit up for it takes aobut a year to get that donut or something like that to take it off. Swimming is good in the summer I love to swim and it works all the muscles. and Right now the only muscles I am worried about are getting them back in my arms after the took our 18 lymphnodes I have empty spots so I do the exersizes that therapist has giving me and hopeing that thos empty spots fill up I am slowly getting arm movement back but it does take time. JUst as losing weight takes time and more time than it took to put it on!. Good luck

It's really hard to control the weight in winter, but why not let it be? The fat help us to keep warm in winter and you can handle losing in weight from next spring.

I hate buying new clothes too. I'm currently too small for my maternity clothes and I can't yet fit into most of my prematernity clothes. Its true though, women hold more weight in certain areas, one to carry a baby, and two to insulate ourselves in the winter. The body is very efficient that way. :)

That is what happens to me. It is too cold to get out, unless I have to shovel the walk (the mailman will not come otherwise) and we have a small house so it is just a short walk to the kitchen, the pantry, and the refrigerator. I could go downstairs, but that is where we have the freezer. So much temptations.

Well, first of all, if you are doing any low calorie diets, stop! I am not suggesting that you make a pig of yourself or overeat, but recent studies show that low calorie dieting hurt in the long run more than they help. Reason is because when you cut calories, after a few weeks, your metabolism slows down in order to adjust for the lower calorie intake. In order to lose weight, you want to speed up your metabolism, not slow it down, because your metabolism is what burns fat. I used to try every crazy diet I came across. Some didn't work at all, and some worked for a few days or weeks than stopped. And if I lost weight with any of them, I just gained it back and often more, shortly after coming off the diet. What I find does work, is to eat healthy overall, and only eat when you are hungry. Eat slowly so that your food has time to digest, when you eat fast, your brain doesn't have time to process when you are satisfied and then it is easy to overeat before you realize it. Also, eat only until you are satisfied, not until you feel full. In other words, the hunger pains or discomfort should be gone, but you shouldn't feel as though you have a weight in your stomach. Aside from that, just keep doing what you have been doing, climbing the steps and whatever. The weight loss will be slow and gradual, but it should come. Also, remember that if you are weight lifting or anything like that, it is possible to weigh more, but still have lost fat, as weight lifting builds muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. If you try all this and still have trouble losing fat, I would suggest asking your doctor if he or she could suggest a personal weight loss program that would be targeted especially for you and your needs.

My husband tells me to eat less, but I find when I eat more, I lose more. Like when we went to the restaurant, I really pigged out and if someone had asked for dessert, I would have had some, but no, I had to be polite. I have to speed up my metobolism. I will take the advise on eating slower.

I'm the same way, when I eat more - but not all at one sitting, I lose more - especially now with nursing - I need at least 2300 calories - but even before. In November I was eating between 1200-1500 calories - sometimes less - I was a little bit depressed - and I kept on the weight - even creeped up. Now I'm eating substantially more - and I'm very happy - and I've lost like 6 lbs since the beginning of the month. Which actally isn't good for me since with nursing you're supposed to lost half a pound a week - but I found the same was true before pregnancy as well.

I can certainly relate to having weight problems - I spent most of my adult life trying to lose weight, or trying to keep weight off or whatever. What worked for me was the Atkins Diet. It's not for everyone, I know people who tried it and hated it or it made them unwell but it suited me perfectly. I hate counting calories, I hate being hungry, I love stuff like cream and butter, etc so it was really the ideal diet for me. It's the only diet I ever followed where I was never, ever hungry. In fact there were times I had to force myself to eat which is unheard of for me! Really it changed my eating habits completely and I've never gone back to my old way of eating. I used to eat way too much carbohydrate before. Anyway in total I lost 56lbs in just under 6 months. I'm not skinny - I will never be skinny because that's just not the shape I was meant to be - but I'm happy with the weight I am now. Plus I always think that once you get past 40 it's better to have a little padding - I think losing a lot of weight can be quite ageing on your face so I'll settle for being a few pounds heavier than my "ideal weight". If Atkins doesn't suit then I guess the best suggestion is just combining sensible eating and exercise. What about exercise DVD's that you can do at home? Mind you, I have loads of them gathering dust on the shelf. I do them a couple of times when I first buy them and then that's it lol! Or the other thing that I did find quite good, and it's the only piece of exercise equipment I've ever consistently used, is an elliptical trainer. I think they're sometimes called "cross trainers" as well. They are better than treadmills or exercise bikes because there's no impact or jarring on your joints but they're good for fat burning. They are quite pricey but worth it I think.

We are finishing our basement so we have our treadmill up in our bedroom and it is rather boring. Now if I can get my husband to buy one of those elliptical trainers it might work especially when it is too cold to go out.

I can't relate simply because before last winter I didnt work out in the winter...and it REALLY showed :-/ Last winter though I went out and shoveled (though I shouldnt have due to medical issues)..I did my yoga, used my free wts etc and granted I certainly DID NOT workout nearly as much as I do in the warm months but EVEN A LITTLE MOVEMENT a day is a good thing... I would suggest that you continue to do little things...maybe you and a friend could WALK the Mall..(not just TO IT but walk around inside it a few rounds at a quicker than shopping pace)..continue doing things like using wts, using the treadmill, walkign the stairs, watching what you eat (I know for me in the winter I love very fattening comfort warm foods) and DON'T bother worrying so much about what the scale says etc..Be consistent, DON'T give up..stay positive and come spring I'll be willing to bet that you'll have dropped wt AND will be ready to kick it into high gear when the warm weather comes :-D

If you really want to loose weight you have to cut down on food intake. Exercise is good for you but it doesn't loose much weight at the level of exercise we are talking about here. On the treadmill for 6 or 7 hours getting a good sweat up is one thing but walking 2 miles is nothing. Believing you are 'big boned' is just skirting around the problem if you are honest with yourself. Cut half your food intake for 3 months and see the result.

I am definitely big boned. I am what you call solid. I will do more walking, and maybe that will help, but it is near Christmas and I do not want to buy too much. I cannot get on a treadmill for 6 to 7 hours and I do not want to get into starvation mode.
• Abernathy, Texas

Although you're right about eating healthy - you're wrong about the treadmill. If someone doesn't excercise at all or not much - whatever they do will make a difference. Of course, to avoid hitting a plateau, one needs to both shake up what they're doing - even running every day - your mm get used to it - and gradually increase your level. If you're talking about running on the treadmill or even walking for six or seven hours - that's unhealthy. Plus, as I learned in my weight loss counseling classes, if you're at a certain level of activity over a certain amount of hours a week, you actually need to increase calories. I saw it with my clients, if they were excercising over a certain amount and on a 1200-1500 diet - they actually started gaining until I increaed their calorie levels. That is if they didn't tell me and I had to find out by asking questions because they plateaued or gained. Further, many of my clients - even the ones wanting to lose over up to fifty pounds or more - weren't always eating a large amount of calories, sometimes their metabolism had slowed way down and they needed to rev it up - by eating more up to 1500-1800 depending on weight and such, and by eating six small meals a day. And of course drinking plenty of water. If they hadn't been excercises at all - I told them anything they do would make a difference - including parking further away taking the stairs etc. As they lost, they were even more motivated to up their excercise - and they had more energy. I did always encourage excercise though - because if you cut your calories without excercising - you run the risk - as many found out - of going down in weight and up in fat percentage. Suspensful don't listen to this person, cutting your calories in half is too drastic, you need to go down more slowly then that.

I've been doing the treadmill. I sweat for 30 minutes every other day and it's working. I've lost a little weight and I think I'm losing inches. It's really too early to tell. I'm being conscious of my body and it seems to me when I eat more processed food and less raw food my body has aches and pains. I have to start figuring out what not to eat. That will be the hard part for me I think. Bread appears to be a big no-no. Even though I'm eating soy linseed bread I think it's gumming up my works; I know when I go without I feel less pain and movement is easier. Ask your husband if he can be more positive and encouraging instead of critical and negative.

I have decided to do a little dancing, make up a few steps and move around after doing twists and arms over, and crunches. It seems to be working. We do have a treadmill, but I am the type of person who cannot walk without seeing a change of scenery. I find I can do only twenty minutes at the most and that I go crazy, but a walk outside for an hour does not phrase me at all. Yes and bread for me is a no no.

Find out what you ideal weight is and just make that your goal for weight loss instead of what your hubby wants. I'm guessing 160-180 lbs. but I don't know your height so not sure. That is my ideal weight range and I'm large-boned as well but I'm 5'7". Everything your doing is great. Wish I had a flight of stairs to exercise on but all I have is a weight bench that is out in the shed since I have no room for it in the house. You lose weight for yourself, not hubby or anyone else. If your happy with your size, then tell hubby to shuddup about it.

I am gaining a bit on my face and for me once the face looks fat, then I have to lose some, but diet does not work. I have decided to move a bit more, but it is hard to cut out things when they are in the house all the time and salad stuffs are more expensive in the winter and it is too cold to get outside unless you have someplace definite to go to.

You tell her! So true. When I was in weight loss counseling - I actually turned away potential clients sent there by their husbands or other family members. It doesn't work unless you want it. In a way, what you said in another post about him wanting you to buy a certain butter because its better for you can be sabataeging (spelling) because if you're told again and again to eat better or have comments about your weight - if you're like most of us - you want to rebel! Or you feel bad and want to eat. I agree with the above comment by blackbriar - if you're happy with your weight and your doctor is too...then you're fine! Except for the clothes part - maybe you can have separate winter clothes.

Oh yeah. I have tried everything to lose weight. I find as we get older it gets harder. I am like you and I walk a lot, but not now that it is so cold, but I still walk on my treadmill everyday. I eat so little and just good food, but it doesn't seem to help. I think I drink to much coffee and I add creamer or milk, and sugar in it so I think that is my downfall. Ohter than coffee I drink only diet drinks and I don't eat junk food. Well, or hardly ever. I eat a lot of fruit and vegggies everyday. I am about 20 or 25 lbs. overweight and I just can't lose it no matter how hard I try.

You sound like me. I eat lots of vegetables, and I put cream in my coffee. Not sugar though, and I walk, lift weights, and we have a treadmill, eat salads, but nothing seems to help, so since it does not, maybe we should blame it that we live in Winnipeg. Now, I do not know if you lived here all your life, but I did not. We moved here because my husband worked for CN and got transferred. So maybe I should blame it on CN transferring my husband here. :)

Well I would suggest you to include lots of fruits and greeny vegetables to your diet. Fruits and bananans helps in increase metabolism and will helps to decrease the weight. Loosing weight is a slow process. It will takes couple of weeks or months initially to loose weight. I would suggest that you should stick on with your exercises. Sauna belt is good for sweating and it burns fat to small extend. Also, try to drink hot water or cold water with temperature slightly different because our body will take more energy to adjust with it and this will helps to increase metabolism and decrease the calorie. Drinking water is good for health as this tends to increase the metabolism and also clean our intestine. I would suggest you to take lime water or fruit juices reguarlly. Cutting out snacks helps to decrease the weeight to some extend.

Weight lifting would just bulk you up more I imagine. If you want to lose weight and it's too cold outside to exercise, why not go to a sauna? You'll be warm in there and the fat will sweat off! Or if that's not your cup of tea-control your diet. If you're not burning much off in the form of exercise, then you must restrict your intake. You don't have to starve yourself-just cut down on fatty foods. These are obviously things like lollies, biscuits, chips and sodas. Also eat less red meat-or totally cut it out. You can get plenty of iron and protein from chicken, fish and legumes. Why not eat white meat 2-3 times a week and meat-free meals every other day? I think the best way to lose weight is by using common sense and will power. If you're feeling hungry, fill yourself up with a salad. Make it tasty and satisfying by adding things like cubed pumpkin, beetroot, corn and even a bit of shredded chicken. Good luck and I hope you reach your goal weight sensibly!

I recently bought one of those mini trampolines at walmart and that has been doing some good. I do about 20 to 30 minutes walking on it or jogging lightly on it and it is really good. Works all of your body. That's an option and also walking in place to a video like Leslie Sansone, she has some very good videos as well!
