I have to write this story and it should begin with Emma couldn't believe what she saw in front of her. And I really don't like this sentence because it kind a limits my imagination. I really don't wanna write it because the only thing that comes to my mind is kind a soap opera story (because I don't wanna write about ghosts) so I was thinking to write about this Emma girl who saw her mother or father kissing another woman or man but my room mates laughed at me saying that I watch to many soap operas (and I don't because I stopped watching soap operas 6 years ago)
So now I am sitting here writing on my lot instead of writing this silly story. I know that I have to write it just to practice my English and the use of perfect tenses but I should be creative and this sentence really doesn't inspire me.
What do you do when you need to do something and you just can't make yourself do it? Please let me know. Thanks

Maybe you should forget about that sentance completley and just write a story. Then when you are all done see if you can incorporate that sentance into your story!
Emma could see anything in front of her! A car crash, a million dollars, a new puppy. So, maybe stop thinking about what emma sees and instead try to think about what you would enjoy writing about. Throw Emma in after you have your idea :)

One more thing... I had a similar situation last week. I had to write a speech. I kept trying to do an intro but then it wouldn't flow into the speech topics I wanted. So finally I changed it up. I listed the speech topics I wanted, wrote that part of the speech, and only then did I go back and write the intro.
Sometimes it's easier to start in the middle.

Yes, Emma could see a wide variety of things, it could even be a locket with a picture of her parents inside that she found when she was cleaning out her closet. Who knows...but what matters is the focus. Don't think of the leading sentence hindering or limiting your creativity, but focusing it. I sit and stare at the blank screen all the time, finding myself losing focus and nothing is clear. Once I make myself pay attention, the words just come pouring out and I have a nice little story to show for it.

If I really have to do it, I just do it. back to the sentence, have you ever written a suspense story? Emma could be seeing the main clue that solves the mystery. Then you can tell the story in flashbacks. As you can see, I have seen too many mystery stories.

Thanks a lot, at the end I stopped worrying about the story because it wan't that important at all to write something really original. I wrote about emma who saw an accident but she didn't realize that the woman who got hit was herself. Thanks for your help.

i have been caught up in lots of situations like this and i really don't like the feeling of it. my advice to you would be to take some time to think about it. get away from family and friends (it doesn't have to be far away but a place with no noise or people) and start to think. this really helps when you're calm and relaxed. be patient and the right idea will pop up.

i usually experience that kind of feeling in the office. there are a lot of projects which i don't like to do when i haven't finished my current one. but sometimes, when the need arises, i just have to force myself and do it. but of course, when you do force yourself, the outcome is so different from the one which you really like working on. and so i can say, i am never satisfied with the results of most projects which i just did because i had to (though i never wanted to do).

Hello dear lorelai. There are many times that I feel lazy and do not want to do things that I have to do. If I could delay doing it, I would delay, but eventually I would still have to do it within the last minute. So now I am changing myself not to be so lazy, but try to do what I can do at an earlier date so that I could perform my work better. Thanks for your discussion, dear friend.

When I absolutely have to do something that I really don't want to do I give myself a reward for it. Like I'll do the dishes then I'll give myself a peice of chocolate (addicted to chocolate) or somethin that I like and makes me feel really good. Thne I'll go back and do something else that I don't want to do but have to do and then get something else. I know this isn't about your writting assignment but it answers your question in general. Plus it sounds like you already got a start on you assignment.

Well, all I do is write down my thoughts. It does not have to be in sequence or in "perfect" grammar, all you have to do is write down every thought you have. You must have a notebook for it. After some time, you go back and read those notes then try constructing few senteces from those thoughts and after awhile you will have a story. Every stories are silly, just like every lovers are mushy. It does not matter whether you watch too much soap operas if those are one of your sources for your imagination, go ahead, write. Don't mind what other people think of what your story is all about, just write. You can not please everybody.

The thing that I really dislike doing is taxes... right after the holidays, I have to do 3 different kinds and it takes a lot of time and paperwork. I have no choice... I have to do them... but I end up stalling as long as possible.
I will trade doing that paperwork for the job of writing your story... you could try thinking of something positive and wonderful that Emma saw... that may make it easier. Good luck!

At times, I will not force the issue on me. I mean, it's hard sometimes to convince yourself when you are not even convinced. :)

I like the way you write but I think you are limiting yourself a bit. For example, you don't sound as if you have used much imagination although you say you have one. It could be anything! Think about it; when you were given the story title YOU couldn't believe what you saw in front of you!
Now apply it to anything. Get imagining!

Start by writing a list of things Emma might have seen in front of her. Don't worry about how silly it seems. Take it from the point of what you decide she's seeing.
I know the feeling about writing something you don't want to write!
