Does a dog know when it's master is dying?

I remember hearing at a very young age that a dog will mourn when it's master is dying. Years later I was neighbours with a couple who had the husbands father living with them. He was an elderly gentleman of about 90 years, but was able to get outside in the yard on sunny days and his dog was his constant companion. A few months after I moved there, the man became ill and slipped into a coma. His wishes had been to die at home rather than in a hospital. He died around 8am, and I remember it well, because I had not been able to sleep during the night. The dog next door kept me awake with the most mournful sounds that I have ever heard in my life! Does anyone else have a similar story as it would be interesting to know if this is a common occurrence.

I do not have any scientific proof. But people in the province claim that dogs usually are restless when they feel like their masters are dying. They do have that mournful sound once they feel like something is wrong. Remember dogs could hear and see things that we don't. :)

Tryxiness- I do believe that dogs understand and know when their master is sick. While I was waiting for a liver transplant, my golden retriever wouldn't leave my side. He would constantly lean on me and look at me, like he knew. We would talk to each other all the time. He was such a comfort to me.

i'm not sure if a dog knows when its master is dying, but i do know that animals have a tendancy to sense when danger is approaching. i must say that your experience is extraordinary (i wish i could have been there to experience this). i believe that anything is possible, anything can happen and if you say so then i believe you.

Hello dear pose. It is really an interesting fact to know about. I did not know that dogs know when their loved masters are going to leave us. From the story that you have written here, it shows that dogs are very clever animals and also very human ones.
The very thing that I have heard about dogs is that they have the ability to see ghosts, which is very terrifying to me. Anyway I am not sure about the truth, but it is interesting about this.
