Why do you suppose large box store build 10 or more cash registar stations then never have them open? I went to Walmart last night and there were at least 4 people in each line with a cart full. I know they have cut back on staff because of sagging sales but you would think they could cover an extra cashier when they need it! Do you know why they build so many then never have them open and has this happened to you?

Yes this kind of happens with me every time..!!
I mean I see so many cash register stations but only two of them are open..!
It freaks me out soo much!!
Why do we have to stand in such a long line while we see other cash stations "closed"..!!
And of top of that the people standing before you have their wheels all fully loaded!!
I mean can a situation get any worse than this..!! Then suddenly we hear that the cash station we are standing in got out of order, and now we have to join the another long line again!!!
Huh!!!
Well I guess such is life dearies.

When they designed and built the store, they thought they would have enough people to work. But now, they don't have enough people. You would think that they would have hired more people to work the holiday season but I guess not.I wouldn't be surprised if they make some of those check outs self service like the supermarket.

That is so wrong.Where is the loyalty? And if they get rid of the older employees and get new ones and the new ones aren't as good at the job, especially with customer service, they will lose customers.I haven't been to my Walmart in years because there is a Target closer to my house and it is cleaner and the staff are kinder.

They might to eliminate jobs. Our walmart just fired a bunch of workers who had been in our town since the first walmart was built.....so if they are short it's their own fault. They fired a bunch of older ones they were paying higher wages to!

I work at a large store that has about 30 cash registers and I do get mad when there are alot of people in line and only 5 or 6 registers open. I work until 10pm and then sometimes I shop after work just to get a few things. The store I work at have self check out registers but they close them down at 10. It makes me so mad that I have to wait in line in back of someone who has a whole cart full of stuff and I only have 2 or 3 items. They have gotten better and kept the self checkout lanes open and that helps out alot.

There is a hope that you can have all the lanes open. Then there is a reality of being able to afford to have only so many open. Walmart is the worst for such issues. I have only been there once where we didn't have to wait and usually it is a really really long wait. We were in the 20 items or less line once (which had about six people in front of us but was going to be better then the 15 other open lanes; our Walmart has 40 lanes), and this man in front of us started talking to our son (about a year at the time). He says, "This is how they do it now days, you come to Walmart a baby and you leave in the third grade!" I will never forget those words...

They must not have enough people working is all I can think of. I have been to Wal Mart a lot recently and found the same thing and the ones working seem stressed. The other night we were in line and after we got there she turned off her light. Well people kept coming in line and she kept telling them she was closed and was getting so mad that people would not look at the lights. I have done that though, you see a short line and don't pay attention. I thought she was going to go off so I just tried to be nice so she wouldn't smash my produce or anything. Then I had a coupon that was not working and she told me I can't cheat the system. I told her I had no intention and the coupon was valid (it said any product by this brand) and she wouldn't give it to me. Heck if I was going to wait in customer service for an hour to get my $1.00 but I was kind of mad she thought that of me.

I am sure they are very stressed this time of year and probably overtired. They really need to get on top of this..Customers are supposed to be the main concern in a business. and it was rude of her to think you were doing anything but using a coupon! I have had that happen too..it had expired and I looked at it wrong!

Ya know, I have thought that many many times. The Wal-mart by my house is always full and they have 20+ registers. I have seen maybe half of those manned during the middle of the day on a Saturday when lines are 10+ people deep. I know one problem at that store is that the management is bad, they don't pay that well, and they are always hiring. What people do is get on at that location then in 6 months when they can transfer to another store, they do

Our K-mart is notorious for that. During non holidays times they'll keep only one lane open no matter how many people are there until people finally start complaining. Then as soon as they get caught up they'll shut the "extra" lane down until people start piling au again. During the holiday rush they might open up 3-4 on a regular basis.
Last night a bunch of people were in the grocery store to get last minute supplies before today's snow. It's a P&C so it's plenty big. If I remember right they have 14 lanes including the express lane. But they only bothered to have ONE open. S/o's mom stopped and she said that there were 20 people in line while she was there.

I question that also. About 12 registers closed and maybe 3 or 4 in use. Also I can never find a clerk in Walmart anymore. I have to run around and look for one...maybe they are cutting help...because of all of the crabbing everybody does about paying them a bigger wage.

i have often wondered this same question there are never enough cashiers open walmart is bad but kmart is worse they have 8 lanes and 2 open it makes no sense and i have walked out of these stores and left the buggy there because of these lines you would think that they would want to make shopping as painless as possible

I have seen that too....once at our Home Depot. A guy came in to buy three books on remodeling or something for his boys for Christmas and there was not a cashier in sight! He was mad and left....said he could go someplace else for the books. They would have been over a hundred bucks altogether......
