You generally need a good motherboard, adequate hard drive space (I would say about 160 GB would be good for everyday use and the ocassional gaming or other media applications), 512 MB - 1GB+ RAM memory, a decent microprocessor (aka CPU) -AMD and Intel are pretty equal performace-wise and speed-wise; AMD is usually cheaper. If you don't know how to build a computer yourself, buy a already built one. Purchasing it as a package would probably be cheaper. And wait for deals on holidays/special dates such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Back to School Sales, etc.

If your going to buy a new pc, try to look for an affordable one. Remember that price doesn't really mean that it is better than its competitor. I am talking INtel, I am using AMD right now, although Intel is more faster than AMD. The difference between the two is just little. Another thing don't spend too much on the CPU, spend it on the pheriperals. This will definitely give you bost in speed.
