I have a computer that was bought 2 years ago and has not been upgraded and I have limited funds. What is the most effective method of making it faster without upgrading everything? I have already installed a new hard drive and I know I can get more memory chips but I can only afford to upgrade one feature.
The computer is a HP and is slow swapping things into and out of memory. Sometimes I have to reboot because it freezes if trying to do too many things at once and there are times when I try to delete a file I have been working on and it will not let me because it says it is still being used but it isn't. Rebooting is the only way to fix the delete problem. It is
Can anyone tell me if adding more memory will fix these problems?

hi firend u havent specified the system config..
in genaral...
1.run diskcleanup(start-all programs-accessories-System tools)
specially when u have a net connection..
2.run disk defragmenter(start-all programs-accessories-System tools)
useful when a lot of file transfer is occuring
3.Unistal unwanted programs(Control panel-add/remove programs)
it not only improves the system memory.but the registry entries avoided has a great effect.
4.delte browsing historyand all from intert browsers if u have sufficient speed (internet)
although cached pages turn to be useful in less speeds..
5.Avoid virusus and adware type of stuff...
it eats a good portion of ur memory..
i will recomment 'avast' antivirus since it gave good results and is free...
apart from that it takes a less memory unlike norton and all.very handy...
6. use some REGCLEAN tools....

Reformating is a good idea. And once it is new and fresh, keeping it good will be the key. The best way is to install programs you only need, as some are automatically run in the background, using firefox as internet explorer is known to affect your computer more easily in terms of getting spyware and viruses, and also be smart when using the internet, only visit and download things that look reliable and are trusted.

I bet that you have a lot of programs in your computer. try deleting some of them then you will see that your computer's speed will improve a little bit. If that does not work try to reformat it.
You can purchase additional memory or hard drive to sped up your computer. Sometimes your memory is a bit too short for all those programs. You can also try to buy a video card to speed up the load of graphics.
