Chess is a favorite activity of mine, I was wondering if anyone on here plays and has an opinion on what openings they like the most or what players they like the most. Personally if you want to get better, especially at your endgame and at tactics studying bobby fisher's best games is a good start. Also there is probably no better opening (for learning the basics of the game) than the Italian opening 1.e4 ..e5 2. Nf3 ..Nc6 3.Bc4. These would be my choices in terms of things to study, in over all terms my favorite player is Kasparov because of his good nature and because he took on deep blue. Not to mention he is currently taking on the Russian government which takes some guts. And my favorite all around opening is the c3 Sicilian 1.e4 ..c5 2.c3 because it can lead to some very interesting lines especially if black is unprepared for it. Let me know your thoughts on these things or ask me for a game sometime. I would love to meet some chess players on here.

Thanks for the response, yeah the ruy lopez is one of those must know openings, and i can not claim to know it very well but you are right about how it can lead to both simple and very complex lines, many many variations, again good choices, my name is nyyyte on yahoo i will add you as a friend on here and perhaps we can set some time to meet up and play

My favorite opening is queen's gambit, especially when accepted. My favorite player is Garry Kasparov but since putting up a professional chess organization, I have not heard him much. Whatever happened to PCA he established? I'm not an excellent player but at least I can play!

My favorite chess players are Garry Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and of course now our Philippine sensation and the younges Grand Master in the world today GM Wesley So who just won the the 10th Dubai Open and besting GM Susanto Megaranto in a six round duel and lately topped the Philippines Battle of GM's. When I play white, my favorite opening is the Queen's Gambit (1. d4 d5 2. c4 ...) and when I play black and the and white opens 1. e4, I play the Sicilian Defense (1. e4 c5). I use both the Dragon Variation and the Najdorf Variation. And when white plays 1. d4, I play the Nimzo-Indian Defense and sometimes transform it into the Queen's Indian Defense.

I like Alexander Alekhine a lot. I have studied and reviewed all his chess games before and I found it very entertaining and very instructive. It is very worthy to review his games because all of the chess principles are applied in his games and if you are a student you really understand such strategy in making more precise planning and proper coordination of the pieces.
In openings, I always played Kings Indian Attack in white and If I'm with black I will defend e4 openings with a Sicilian Defense and if I'm facing a d4 player I will respond with a sharp Benoni Opening and the deadly King's Indian Defense. I don't care if King's Indian Now a days are considered as obsolete or not played in high level of chess game because of some of the lines are already refuted by Vladimir Kramnik in his match with Garry Kasparov in 2000 which Kramnik won it.

I'm also a chess player, and I prefer the Ruy Lopez as good opening. Though it is quite common, I still find it very easy. The officials can be easily developed without having to result on risky moves. I have other openings as well, but I want them to remain unnamed. :)

Why we don't talk about defence's??....As white I like too play Ruy Lopez, or even the King Gambit, as defences I prefer the caro-cann. I have played sicilian for many times, but then i realize that everybody plays that soo i changed for cara-cann, a very good one too.
Thx for this discussian matt...Chess is a Great hobbie...
Cheers

My all-time favorites are Mikhail Tal and Jose Raul Capablanca, which just says that I am confused. I like Tal's fireworks-inducing play, but I also like Capablanca's simplistic approach. My favorite current grandmaster right now is Anand because of his ability to calculate positions and make moves quicker than most people.
My favorite openings for white are the English, the Catalan, and weirdly enough, the Benko Opening. Don't ask me why, but I do well with them. For black, I go with French Defense, oddly enough, and the Caro-Kann. I like closed positions.
