The wilderness is a place where higher level ups ambush players by logging in and out, thus appearing when you least expect them. Then they'd back stab you repeatedly because they know you don't have a chance fighting them face to face. Yes, it's not a fair place but that's what makes it dangerous and even exciting---at least if you survive.

Yes, it's because of the reward system, though the rewards are only virtual and psychological. If you've ever played make believe as a kid in a play house or with toy soldiers, you would understand how some people keep playing it even as adults. But you're right that players should lead more productive lives. Also, these games should at least provide good learning situations that would be practical in the real world. I mean, players learn all sorts of stuff in the game which are practically useless in real life. Why not make RPG games where players, especially the young ones, learn practical things? Hey, maybe games can be made where science and other academic subjects can be taught? This way, it will not only be about entertainment but also about education.
