A question for Americans, or anyone else who pays for health insurance

I'm just curious what the cost of healthcare/insurance is in the US, or anywhere else that doesn't have "universal healthcare"? In Canada, doctor and hospital visits are paid for by our taxes. Supplemental insurance (for prescription drugs, eye glasses, dental, etc.,) is an additional cost, but there are programmes available for those who can't afford their medications. Through my husband's work, we pay an additional $27 a month, which covers 90-100% of the cost of these things not covered by the government plan. (Thank god, because otherwise I couldn't afford my medications-I have a receipt here for one that would have cost me $207.77 per month!)

The cost is ridiculous. Most of us get coverage through our employers. Since my husband and I are self-employed we have to bear the full costs. If we had chosen to keep the coverage we had at his last job, it would have cost us over $1100/month just for insurance and that doesn't include the co-pays.
Right now we have no insurance at all and I am scared of my son getting sick.

That's insane! I have a friend in New York who told me he feels "lucky" that he had polio as a youngster (he's in his late 50s) because otherwise, he wouldn't qualify for medicaid or any other health insurance because he "makes too much money". He is now retired, but because he was smart and he and his wife were very frugal throughout their working years, he has too high an income (which is strange to say, as it's mostly his own money that he's socked away) to be considered "needy enough" for aid, and he's not old enough yet to qualify for government aid. (Social Security, I believe it's called?) Anyway, I can't believe the high-cost of medical care in the US. People may balk at Canada's not-for-profit system, and it may not be "the best" in the world, but it helps out a lot of people who couldn't otherwise afford it.

I wish I lived in Canada! In the U.S healthcare is too high to pay. My parenst don't even pay for their health insurance, luckily they manage to pay for mine.+
