'friends' is a popular tv show in America.one of my friends is very eager to watch it as a way of learning english.
recently,he got a little problem when watching this tv show,he asked me, but i have no idea either.so i pop this question here, maybe you know much more about the culture in 'friends'.the question is below:
when Monica got married, she received a lot of presents,in which there is a salt pot.we are confused why they give her a salt pot as a present,is there any meaning?
my friend thought maybe salt is very important in ancient times, many famous writer mentioned about salt in their works, like 'gone with the wind'. in Shakespeare's famous play 'King Lear',the youngest daughter described his father as salt,so does salt has special meanings in English culture?

Hi Yanstill,
Well, salt does have special symbolism in England - salt used to be a rare and precious commodity, not only for seasoning, but because it's essential for life, and used to be rationed out to soldiers as part of their pay (if my memory isn't failing me). An old English saying is that someone is "worth their salt", meaning that their services were as precious as the salt they would have been paid in. Of course, as England is an island country, sea salt was something which was harvested, and a lot of money was made by people who traded it. Also, it was our natural way of preserving meat, so that people could eat meat during the winter months, and used in pickling too. The reason for the symbolism in King Lear refers to the fact that seasoning meat with salt brings out its flavour better than other spices which were indigenous to Britain, so without salt as seasoning, the King couldn't appreciate the flavour of the meat he was served.
As for the Friends episode, I'm not quite sure why the salt pot is included, as salt isn't really something which has much symbolism in the USA, compared to the UK. I can't really remember that episode, but could be to do with the fact that as a chef, Monica would already have a lot of salt pots, so it might be seen as a thoughtless gift, or alternatively, she might see it as a thoughtful gift if it had a deeper meaning between her and the person who gave it to her. In Friends, most of the symbolism is usually to do with the friendships of the group of friends, and previous storylines and events they have shared, rather than having any general cultural symbolism or meaning. Of course, I could be wrong, as I can't quite remember that episode! Hope that helps, and all the best :-)
