something that is practical will be disposable diapers since they are quite expensive and every baby needs them. another gift can be baby rompers. Another gift can be a toy to entertain the baby.
baby slings are quite popular these days too. they help the mummy carry the baby around, with one loop. perhaps shop around in the baby section of a departmental store and you'll find many options!

Well you can send all kinds of things for a new baby. When my mom and I know someone who's having a new baby, we tend to put together a basket of little things... nasal aspirater is the 1st thing we put in. One with a nice long tip, because the other ones don't work worth a d@mn. A baby size nail kit is also something we always add. Diaper rash cream, baby shampoo and soap, lavendar and mentholated bubble baths, lotion, wash cloths, cloth diapers (even if they're using disposable -- they're great in a pinch and they make perfect burp cloths).
When all else fails, a gift card or money is always a welcome gift.

The best and more useful in future or probably they are going to keep for long long time is only one thing: Buy a gold coin - depending on your budget - minimum 1 gm coin they charge close to $20 here in India. That will be more cherished gift. Otherwise buy something of silver if you do not like gold. If you give any articles of plastic or metal, they are not durable and not much of use.

You could always get something ingraved for the baby, like a spoon, I think when they are newborns and after the mom has had a babyshower and stuff they have a lot of what they need for the baby and its a good idea to buy something for MOM to make her feed special and loved and needed. Cause new moms are usually super emotional, and half the reason is due to lack of sleep! lol she's probably apprietiate a few hours of free babysitting most of all! and a hot meal, and a maid, or help cleaning up! I know that's what i would have liked after mine was bornn. some good old fashioned help!

you can never go wrong with baby clothes...shoot for sizes 3-6 or 6-9 months so the baby will grow into them & be able to wear them longer.
there are some items that new moms need, but might wanna check with your mom/sister first: baby towels, baby bathtub, highchair, diapers, baby soap
if you are low on cash, you could make a baby book for her (use a photo album & print out pages for baby's info & milestones...do a yahoo search for ideas)...
you could also get the baby some books or toys
don't worry, you'll think of something!!
