I'm a college student and I'd like to start doing a little investing. Does anyone have any advice about stocks for a beginner? I'd like to start small with only a $1000 or so. Would you recommend an online trading website, or actually go to a broker? Also, does anyone have know of any good reading material on the subject?

I recommend going to the library and checking out some books on the subject. I also like visiting the MSN Money message boards they have a lot of people who are knowledgeable about stocks and investing. I have an account with Scottade. I'm not an active trader I just have some stocks that I'm just holding for the long term. You might want to start with mutual funds to get your feet wet. Instead of buying individual stocks, with a mutual fund you pool your money with other investors to buy the market. If you want the excitement if trading they have EFTs (exchange traded funds)you can trade like stocks.

I'm pretty ignorant of the subject of stocks, but I was under the impression that there isn't much involved with mutual funds. Just go hand a broker some money, and let him do his thing. No effort on my part, and ok results. Is this right?
I'm more looking to get actively involved with stocks, and be able to have bigger returns for my money.

I've never been to a broker except the first time I opened my scottrade account that was before doing things online wasn't the norm. Everything else I do online after I do my own research. Don't trust other people with your money. If you go to an adviser go to one who charges by the hour. Others will try to sell you whatever so they can get their commission!

You have to be very careful in this business. It is the most risky and unstable business. If you get whirled away by the huge returns and go on investing more and more then you will end up with nothing because you never know what is going to happen in Stocks.I would recommend you to learn stocks from an expert for atleast 5-6 months and then start investing.

Sounds like a Ponzi to me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponzi_scheme
"A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that involves paying abnormally high returns ("profits") to investors out of the money paid in by subsequent investors, rather than from net revenues generated by any real business.

Its really a bad time to start investing with the war and companies getting sued every day. But if you really must invest start with this website. They have training, education and all sorts of tools that you can try for free. I think there is even a program that lets you "pretend" to invest and keep track. Dont pay attention to the title. You will see once you visit the site, its legit and known worldwide
