Rotting floor, mouldy walls, rat infested, ice on the inside of the windows

The place I live in now. It is a full time job to keep the neighbors crawly residents out of my residence. The space between the floors is full of mold and mildew because of plumbing leaks and the smell comes up through the plumbing fixtures. Because of the amount of moisture in the building, when it gets cold outside it "rains" inside. I have to dry the ceilings everyday near the windows or it will "rain" on my curtains and table. But right now it is all I can afford so I am stuck for a little while longer.

Hmm, that sounds grim, can you pick up a cheap dehumidifier? I got one free on freecycle here.

Now, that's serious condensation or is the roof leaking?

Wow, sounds really bad where you lived and so does some of the places others described -
The worst place where I lived in was one without a window - I worked on a cruise ship and my cabin did not have a window thus, no sunlight. After a while I felt like I was in prison, without air - it was a horrible sensation that made me avoid my cabin as long as I could.

Nice to hear from you after so long. Yes at least in a horrid house you might have a garden but I wouldn't like to live without a window.

I lived in a bedsit with panes not fitting the window. Dublin can get fairly cold in Winter so this was uncomfortable. The carpet was infested with fleas, but I got some powder and that was sorted out. The worst thing about it was the toilet. Each floor had a toilet to be shared between people. The house had 11 guys in assorted bedsits living in it as well as me and at least one of these guys had a bowel problem. I know because the toilet looked like it had been sprayed, constantly! And as you know, it is necessary for us ladies to sit while using the toilet. Oh, and there was a strange black growth on the walls. No rats though! (unless you count the landlord)

Well, our worst place wasn't as bad as this. We lived for a couple of years in a house where the floors went off at funny angles, so that you ran from the front door down to the kitchen - unintentionally. It was painted funny colours inside, and the toilet was outside - quite pleasant if you wanted to sit and check out the stars at night.

When I was 19 I lived in a place my mother referred to as the Ratzo Rizzo hotel. The bathroom floors were warped and rotted all around the toilets where drunks had missed the pot for years. I had a druug overdose one night on one of those floors.
When you flicked on the lights in your room the living wallpaper disappeared.
I put rat poison under my sink one night and the next morning found it under my pillow.
I walked into a friends room one day to find him holding a hunting knife to another friend's throat who was hog-tied in the middle of his floor.
I'm glad to have remembered that place because it puts my current situation in an entirely new, and not unfavorable, light.
