Help myLot friends! My husband and I are moving into a townhouse in a couple of weeks. It is smaller than the place we have now, but it's what we need to do for our family. Here's the thing. All the flooring has to be replaced before we move in. I need some suggestions on what to put down. We know we want the whole place to be the same. We know we don't like carpet or Pergo. So, what do you suggest? Light colors would make the place look bigger, right?

Looks like you've already figured out what I was going to tell you! I like the sound of smoke/gray tiles and I think you'll be very happy with the size. I personally prefer wood flooring with tile coming in a very close second. For wood I actually think that darker floors with light walls make a room look big and my favorite is a rich chocolate brown. Tiles just seem different to me and I like the light colors the best.

That's exactly why tile comes in a close second for me. I would love one look throughout but there's no way I will do wood in a bathroom. They put the laminate in the bathroom here and it looks horrible...just like you said, warped in placed and water stained. But it's also in the main areas and it looks nice so I plan to continue it throughout the rest of the house and replace the bathroom floor with tile.

I might have to consider that for later on. My husband and I have decided to hold off on doing the flooring right away. We are going to live in the place for a little bit and get a feel for the personality of the home. Argh, I hate moving and making decisions! LOL

Thanks for your response, foxy. I thought about wood floor, well the laminate anyway. Since we are doing the entire house the same, I didn't want the wood in the bathroom and kitchens areas. I've seen how warped the wood (laminate) gets in temperature changes and by getting wet. Thanks again!

It really depends. There is no hard and fast answer. there are other elements besides floor. If you do pergo or tile or hardwood, pay attention to the way the tiles or boards/grain is going. Just like a woman wearing a striped shirt that makes her look taller or shorter based on the way the stripes go if that makes sense. Also, it depends on the whole room. A room with rich colors with the right scale of furniture can look like a cozy jewel box and actually seem bigger than a plain small room with white walls and a light floors. Just keep scale in mind for all of your selections.
As far as material, I would revisit the idea of a laminate. some higher grade laminates (pergo, etc) look a lot different than they did a few years ago.
Another floor that looks really nice is bamboo floors if you don't want to go with a traditional hard wood.
I have ceramic tile in all places except the bedrooms and love it - but it depends on where you live and your lifestyle.

I do agree with the laminates. I just know that I don't like Pergo because I have it in my current home. I don't like the way that every little speck of dust shows on it. I'm sure there are other nice choices, though. My husband and I went to look at flooring today in a flooring store. I think we are leaning toward ceramic tile now. Who knows what we'll end up with when all is said and done. Thanks for the great ideas to think about. You are right about the way the flooring is layed. We definately want to keep that in mind.

Marble flooring is probably a little out of our price range, but I had not thought of that. I'm not sure it would fit in with the look of the place, but maybe I have the wrong impression of marble. Thanks for the suggestion!

hi! i have gone to some home improvement stores in our place before for some advices on what's best for the flooring of our house. most advice that we get is get a brighter/lighter tiles (which is the common material use here). use a bigger size (14x14 or 16x16). and one more idea that i get from them is that if you want the space to look wider/bigger, install the tiles diagonally (maybe with accent of darker color in each corner end place alternately). good luck!

Thanks, red! That is great advice about installing the tiles diagonally. I have to be honest, I'm not sure that I can do that. I am a very symetrical person, so we'll have to lay a few tiles on the floor and see what my brain thinks about that! LOL

Laminent. Very light color. The best stuff for floors next to hardwood. And it looks almost like hardwood. Yes, you are right about the lighter the color the bigger the rooms will look. Don't go with the dark stuff, your rooms will look even smaller than they are.
It's always fun to move into a new place. To be able to start decorting it the way you want to. To get the look you want. Have fun.

I have to say that I'm not sure I'm ready to try wood laminate again. I thought I would really like it, but I am not impressed with the stuff that is in my home now. It shows EVERY speck of dust or dog foot prints. That could be because of how dark it is, though.

Light colours definately make the room look bigger. but don't feel like you have to use white! you could do a feature wall to make it look more interesting!
I would probably suggest using polished floor boards, they look nice and use a light colour paint on the walls. Floor boards look neater than carpet and are easier to clean!

Thank you. I do want to stay away from white, especially on the floors.
