Mail Overflow

I sit here in my bedroom where my eyes continue to be drawn to a box that is overflowing with a backlog of mail. Many of you may remember that several months ago I purchased a shredder(something I had been wanting for a long time). I have, in fact, used this gadget a total of 1 time since I bought it. I don't know why it is such a chore to plug the thing in and let it do its job-it just is! I have decided that today is the day that I will get rid of all the junk mail. Do you receive a lot of junk mail? How do you dispose of it?

Since we are out in the country we burn it. Unfortunately with the cold and snow, that makes it difficult, so our junk mail is getting to overflow too..:(

I give almost anything to be out in the country right now, carmelanirel. You could always get a couple of boxes and stack it in them.

I know worldwise, as much as I complain about neighbors, I should be grateful for being where I am.. Maybe one day you will have the opportunity..:)

It is not my favorite chore, but I let the husband do the shredding most of the time. I have been cleaning and gather things up. I have filled two tubs with things that I want him to shred, and am ready for him to get it done. Of course, I could do it.

I'll tell you one thing, GG, I will NOT allow the junk mail to ever pile up this way again.

Shredding is the best way, it might be a chore but at least you know that any private or personal details are going to end up in the wrong hands, a few minutes or in your case a few hours work will save sooooo much hassle, if one of those letters got in the wrong hands, you'd have months of battling to get back your ID! So it's worth every penny! I get soo much junk which goes into my nice black shredder beneath my computer desk, it's worth it's weight in gold! I do it every day as it keeps it down. I also use all the shredded paper for the compost bin, it rots down! Either that or it makes ideal bedding for animals! Recycling too, what a bonus! So have fun, get shredding! And I'll come and mop your sweaty forehead when it gets too much xxxx

You are a dear man, wolfie! You always seem to give such wonderful advice. I promise that once I get caught up, I will start shredding every day and not allow it to pile up as it is now.

If I have junk mail, I just pitch it. If it is credit card offers, I shred them so that no one else can send them in. I do get alot of junk mail.

Because of numerous address changes over the last year, the junk mail has been unable to follow me around. For anything I need to get rid of that has usable information on it, I will shread it up. For regular junk mail, I just toss it away. If I had a fireplace, that would be the place to get rid of it.

I would love to have a fireplace right about now, sigma. I don't understand my hesitancy to shred. After all, it involves very little physical input.

Gosh, I'd love a paper shredder. I hate throwing out all the unwanted mail and empty envelopes. I could use the paper as mulch in my garden and pot plants.
I've not had an opportunity to buy one as I've never seen them anywhere for sale....are they expensive?
I suppose in winter I could also use it for fuel in my new wood burning heater.

You make a good point about the security factor.
My friend never throws anything away. Since I've known him...2 years now, the pile of paper all over his floors in every room has grown. I'm talking loungeroom, office and bedroom. He reads everything that comes in the mail and throws very little away. He also makes notes on cardboard and scraps of paper and keeps those. He has been cleaning up recently and has put shelves and cupboards everywhere and every scrap of paper has been "filed" in it's own place according to a category he has nominated. *sigh*, to each his own. lol.

They're not expensive at all, Ms Tickle, if you consider the possibility of damage that could be done if someone steals your identity. It's just easier to shred the paper and you can always find other uses for it once it's done.

Who knew shredders were so vital to life, rx4life? Maybe we should all put our heads together and try to come up with a better mousetrap.

Do I ever. I put all the junk mail in a pile and then shred it at least once every two weeks.

Well, maddysmommy, being determined as I was, I did finally get the job done even though it took a good sized chunk out of my day.

I pretty much just throw/tear up junk mail as I get it, so daily. What my fault is though, is that say I get mail that I just don't have time to really look at, at that moment, then I'll put it in this large plastic tub-like container to deal with it some other time. But then once in awhile, I take an entire day off from everything else, and go through all old papers including the mail and whatever I don't want or need anymore, will just throw out
I never wanted a shredder, not with pets around. I once did a discussion about that very topic how people with pets, it they do insist on having a shredder to not only turn it off but unplug it as well. The consequences not to are horrible from reports or pet's tails or paws getting trapped/stuck in one, or even tongues that have been shredded..ekk!

I can imagine such a scenario, pyewacket, if you aren't careful with these things around pets. I am so intimidated by mine that I leave it unplugged unless I am going to use it right then and there.

A woman after my own heat. I have a dinning room table piled with mail. I HATE MAIL, I HATE EVERY PART OF IT, EXCEPT PERSONAL LTTERS FROM FAMILY. No one ever writes letter anymore so I pretty much hate all mail. I do love checks that come in the mail.
My dinning room table sits 8 and it is piled with a good layer of mail. I have to go through it before christmas dinner.
I also have a shredder, I find it dose not run as fast as I can feed it. I get board easly with using it.
Good luck with your mail.

The waiting absolutely gets on your nerves, teapotmommommerced! I get so much mail that I accidentally threw away a check once. Luckily it was just a small one.

lol...yes my sister from another mother! I have a shredder and I USE it often!! All of my junk mail goes in there and I just found a new use for it. I needed some "shreddings" for a christmas gift bag so I put some shiny gift wrapping paper in it and came up with some awesome shreddings to use in the bag! All of my junk snail mail goes into my shredder. It sits under my desk right where it's needed!

I don't have much junk mail. If I do, I don't shred. I just either use it for something else, like paper-masche hehehe.. but most, we just burn together with dry leaves.
It's really funny reading the responses. I never thought a shredding machine could be so important. I guess there really are uses to most of the inventions and gadgets. But not all need those.

I think it is due to the onset of so much identity theft, laydee, that has created such a need for shredders. You don't suppose it could be a conspiracy, do you?

Hmm.. I don't really think so. I think it's just a number of people trying to get the opportunity of earning big at the expense of the other, it indeed is something to worry about but I don't think people would go through lengths of recovering your information through your garbage (well unless someone is really either obsessed or desperate) they can actually get it online faster with all the credit cards and online transaction (bank included).
Anyways, here in my country, someone looking through another's garbage can't be thought of because our garbage are really garbage hehehe.. plus we mostly burn papers together with our dry leaves anyways.
Thanks for the reply though.

We get a pretty big amount of junk mail. I, too, for some reason am resistant to the shredding chore. Ours is plugged in all the time and is really not a big deal to use. It fills up so fast, though! Then I have to lug it over to the trash can and hope I don't spill everything out of it causing another chore. It's really a vicious cycle. Most of the time I just throw the junk mail away unless it has important information on it.

I think I will do the same, blueunicorn. The shredding is beginning to sound less and less appealing, LOL.

Junk mail? yes, very many, but junk e-mail that I received. so I have no the trouble what you had, I'm sorry to hear your trouble, it's real borther.
you can get rid of all the junk mail, selling to the company which deal with the recycle of waster paper. you can tell the person who was sent by the company to drop in your house, frequently. you may earn some extra money, as mylot, ha-ha.
