Preferred text and background colors

Part of what I plan on attempting to find time to do is clean up a few of my webpages during my winter break. One of the things that I need to clean up is my background colors. And yes, occasionally the colors of my text. In my defense, some of the worst offenders were done during the earliest days of me messing around with web design; not that you can really call what I do web design.
So what colors of text and background do you prefer? Are there any color combinations that you find hard to read, or just basically don't like?

most of the time it is seen that the websites have white background with the black text. The reason is to be so much had been treated with this colour combination that we feel that it is normal. The other very decent combination which I find on websites there is white text with black or dark grey background that they should not be very light but on the darker side of black which creates a direct contrast and that is the reason why the text is very readable and easy to understand. There are other colour combinations which look good but I feel that they are very hard to read on eyes because other colours tend to distract the user and create problems to the eyes. I design websites and I hardly use any other background colour except for white and grey.
