I'm just curious because I'm from the Chicago area and no one EVER says soda around here. But when I travel I hear it all the time. Is the northern midwest the only place that calls pop pop? I'm curious how this pop/soda thing all started because everytime I hear someone call pop soda its strikes me funny.

I'm from the south, and around here, we call it soda. We can always point out a northerner if they call it pop. Because no one in my area ever uses that term, unless of course they are from up north somewhere.

Yeah that was an interesting trip a few months back to New Orleans. I think I got called a Yankee like 10 times (mostly in fun)during the trip. I was also interesting how "south" Missouri and Arkansas and those states seemed to me.

I grew up about an hour south of Chicago and I grew up calling it pop. When I moved to St. Louis 4 years ago everyone called it soda and they looked at me weird when I called it pop. I soon started calling it soda as well. I guess it just kinda stuck to me hearing it all the time.

I notice that too that when I get past U of I (Champaigne) in central Illinois it seems like everyone becomes Cardinals fans and more prone to St. Louis than Chicago.

Isn't it funny how you are in Cubs country and then all of the sudden you are surrounded by Cardinals fans?

I have always called it pop. Grew up in suburbs of Chicago. When I moved to New York for 5 years, everytime I asked for a pop, my roommates laughed and asked me , "What"? I call gym shoes, gym shoes. In New York they call them sneakers. When I told them I was going to the store to buy a new pair of gym shoes, they had no idea what I was talking about. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. PEACE

When we are low on drinks I tell my fiance that we need some pop for the house and sometimes we just call it soda.

I have lived all over the United States. I have heard it called everything from Soda, Pop, Cola, Shasta, and Moxie. Very strange some of the names that are out there for our carbonated drinks. Aingealicia

I have lived all over this great country of ours. The only place that I have ever heard it called pop, is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My two cents on this subject.

I've heard of people calling it pop before, but personally in Miami everyone says soda.

People in the Chicago area, Indiana and Michigan all call it pop. If you go towards the Northeast it's soda. If you go to Boston it's tonic (although I don't know if that is still the common phrase in Boston)...it was when I was a kid. In the South, I often here it called "drink." Strange.

We've always called it pop in my part of Ohio too. I've known a few Canadians that say pop, but not sure where they're originally from. Friends and family in Georgia and Texas always laughed at me for saying pop. Everytime someone mentions the soda vs. pop debate I always think of the 80's movie the Outsiders. Rob Lowe played "Sodapop" Curtis. ;)
