I am planning on buying a new gaming PC. I used to think that core2duo and dual core are the same thing, but later found out that core2duo costs much more than the dual core. Whats the difference between the two processors? Is it worth buying the core2duo if you already have the firepower of a geforce 8800GT(thats the gfx card i m planning to buy)??

Are you talking about Pentium Dual Core? Otherwise, "dual core" itself is just a term. It could be Intel, AMD, or whoever. But the Pentium Dual Core is one of Intel's earlier dual core families, while Core 2 Duo is one of the newest. The architecture will be different, and most certainly the Core 2 Duo will be faster. It was Core 2 Duo that last snatched the game back for Intel. It was Athlon 64 FX-55 the last time I read that AMD had (or seemed to have) the upper hand. They're still selling processors, but apparently not as many as they'd hoped. I'm sorry to say that AMD is now worth less than they paid for ATI. :(

By the way, I think that Nvidia card is worth more than a Pentium Dual Core. Apparently you're looking into some serious gaming. I'd suggest you go for Core 2 Duo.

I think you should for core2duo. It is much better than dual core. It has better heat dissipation, lower energy consumption and high amount of cache.

All Core2Duo Processors are Duel Core Processors. All Intel Pentium D Processors are Duel Core Processors. All Duel Core Processors are Duel Core Processors. Pentium D is nothing but 2 Prescott Processors Side by side runs very hot with a Over Clock rate some times. Intel Core2Duo Processors are next gen processors from Intel on 65nm platform developed from groundup with new architecture called core so they are whole new Processors just jump newlike Pentium 2-3-4....

If you're talking about a premade, or made to order pc such as a Dell, you could see what the pricing option is to add a processor upgrade over what it costs to buy a processor upgrade and install it yourself. Same with the video card upgrade option, maybe cheaper to get the pc with a more basic configuratio then upgrade on your own and sell off the parts on ebay... Example Dell computer that could support a core2duo or a quad core but the cost to add the processor from base would add 400 to the purchase price, $280 would buy you a quad core processor saving you $120 off the price, the video card option may be stock 8400 and the upgrade to a 8800gt may cost you $350 when you could buy a 512MB 8800gt for around $250 saving you $100, then selling both parts on ebay for $100... Just an idea, unknown as to your technical knowledge or if you have any friends that could assist you if you hadn't, some of the computer deals are so good lately, Dell machines with core2duos and 22" monitors for around $600 that you can't resist them, and definetly could not build them for the same price. Adding the extras yourself could be a great way to have a $1500 system for 1/2 the cost... Good luck...
