I think it is a horrible idea to put it in drinking water! First off, it wouldn't be in just the drinking water- you would be bathing in it, washing your clothes in it and more. If you read the bottles of fluoridated toothpaste you will see a warning- if you consume more than a PEA-SIZED amount then you are supposed to contact a poison control center!!! That is only because of the fluoride. So they are putting it in our toothpaste for brushing our teeth, they prescribe it to our young children (including infants) in liquid or pill form, and it occurs naturally in certain food products.
Think that if a certain person eats a high volume of those certain foods (many veggies and tea contain it), takes their prescribed fluoride daily and brushes their teeth and accidently swallows some of that toothpaste (not more than a pea-sized amount but everyone swallows traces of it) AND then drinks LOTS of fluoridated water- simply because water is good for you and healthy...well, don't you think that at some point that person is getting an overdose of fluoride??? Oh and add that you will be cooking with that water. Your veggies and pasta and rice will all absorbe the chemicals that are in that water.
That is my fear right there. That I am doing the right thing by eating right and drinking lots of water and brushing my teeth a few times a day and that this is going to cause me to OD on fluoride, which doesn't lack side effects.
If you read some articles about fluoride and what is really is you would fight hard to keep it out of your water.

is a good site with lots of facts.
The really funny thing is that while the supporters of fluoride will only tell you the good side of it, the ones that argue that it is bad for the public will tell ALL sides of the story.

Oh yes...and you can even read the definition of fluoride where it mentions the toxicology. A man studying fluoride reported to have signs of acute toxicity happen at doses as low as .1-.3 mg/kg
A child was killed by overdose with 5mg/kg of fluoride. It doesn't take a lot...

I never thought about having flouride in my drinking water. We get our water from a natural spring. I don't think a little bit would hurt I mean some toothpastes have flouride in them right?
