Reading to your children is very important and the that fact you read to your child young and she loves to read is a good testimony that this is true. I also read to all 4 of my children when they were young. My daughters like to read more than my boys, but they all are good readers. My oldest daughter loves to read so much, when she was a teenager and read everything in the house, she went to the encyclopedias to read. lol

Thanks for the BR...An update on my 6 y/o who is just finishing kindergarten, he now spells things when he talks like we do when we don't want him to know what we are saying... He will say things like, where is the D O G ? or May I have some M I L K ? So pretty soon we will have to go into another room when talking about what surprises we have for him...

Oh sure, very important. My wife and I started reading to jake when he was still inside, although that sounds strange we continued when he was born. He now grabs books and brings them too us and he can "say" certain things, so it's hugely important. it shows he's keen on learning and more important he's enjoying it. ~Joey

I have been reading to my son since he was born. He loves books. I think reading is one of the most important things I do with my son. He has lots of board books that he can get from the shelf by himself and he often sits and looks at them for long stretches of time. Sometimes 20 or 30 minutes- pretty good for a 14 month old. I take him to the library and he love it. He looks at books, plays with some other children sometimes. It is a habit we will keep for a long, long time.

I started reading to my son when he was about six weeks old. He doesn't like it right now. He is 17 months and would usually rather be going. He comes to he library when ever we do and we let him move around some on his own so he knows it is a good place.

I just started to read to my kids. My daughter is 10 months and my son is three. I take them to the library three times a week. It's so awesome. (We don't have a car during the day so I have to do something from going insane!!) I really like ti because we are all learning and bonding. My son likes it becuase he gets to stay up just a little later. Lol

early at 3months old, my nephew shows interest in reading books...when he is crying, his mother will read him some books...they will lay in the bed, then his mother will hold the book in front of him, he cant read but he looked at the pictures of the books like he is reading the story too...then when he knew the story, he will make some noise like he is the one telling the story...until now, he is 10months old, he shows more interest reading books...

I read to my kids every night before they went to bed from the time they were 6 months old until they said they would rather read to themselves. Both of my kids read continuously. My step-daughter was not read to on a daily basis and she really struggled to learn to read. She is now 10 and finally reads at grade level and actually is enjoying reading for fun now.We go to the library about every week.

I love books and I remember beging my father to read to me when I couldnt read and then learning to read by my self and I felt so grown up and proud when I read on my own. I started reading to my son when he was few months old he loved it (not the stories but my voice) he is now 4 and we read a lot he has at least 200 books and we read every night before bed and somethimes during the day. I am happy that he has so much love for books like me as my husband only reads things for school or work and he tells me that with the amount of books I read I could have finished 5 university degrees by now.

Reading is vital to developing a child's intelligence, and teaching them to respect books at home will show you when they are ready to visit the library. I have horror stories about kids at my library pulling stacks down and jumping on them, or coloring as many as they can get their hands on... but they shouldn't have been brought there if they hadn't learned to behave. All three of our kids participated in the National Spelling Bee every year. It doesn't matter that they didn't win... they made it to semi-finals, expanded our reference library every year, and they enjoyed it immensely. As adults, they are interesting to talk to, and don't resort to cursing or slang expressions. I believe that the way you speak shows what you are inside, and reading gave them the tools to achieve a level of intelligence and sophistication that helps them in their lives and careers.

i have no child presently.but my mom started to give me many books to read and teach me drawing as well when i was 3 years old or so. i think that developing kids' drawing hobby is good for kids during the time when they start reading.because as always riterature is related to art, which is learned well by my mom. she is just a great mon in my eyes.i love my mom as now i have benefited from what my mom have done on me. so, i suggest that to develop your kids' hobby on artistic aspect besids starting reading when they are little. good day!

i dont know if i've been fond of books when I was a toddler. cant remember my mom saying anything about it. we moved over to my granny's house when I was seven and we dont have a TV then. not allowed in the house. we have a mini library and almost every corner of the house has a shelf w/ books. w/ nothing else to entertain me I resorted into reading them and got used to it. now I can finish a Robert Ludlum novel or Clive Cussler's in 2-3 nights (",)

I know the earlier you start the better. I don't remember anyone reading to me when I was younger, but I was an only child and needed something to pass my time...i loved reading then and i love reading now. However, my youger sister (13) was read to a lot (or so my mother says) and she isn't that into it. Reading to your children is important, it helps them learn to speak faster I think...learn what things are, use their imagination. I started reading a lot to my 3 year old only a year ago...although i have always read to him, just not as much as now....we always read before bed time and now that he started pre-school they give an incentive.....fill out 5 pages of 10 spots each (so 50 books) with books that you read to your child and keep track of the hours spent and we get a free book...so we have been reading a lot and he is more into it. Not to mention his preschool gave me a great idea....they sent home a book about penguines and a packet to do a penguin collage. It is so cute, they included scissors, pics to cut out, blue construction paper and chalk, feathers...you get the jist...the purspose is to make reading fun! Making something creative after you read a book...something to go along with the story, what a great idea is that?
