I love to travel by train. I best time for me was when I was in Kenya traveling in a comfortable compartment. I saw a giraffe through the window whilst I was eating breakfast. Do you like to travel by train? Which is the best train journey that you have done? Have you ever slept the night on a train?

Hi maximax8:)Hope all is well!:) I've never rode on a train before in my life.Im kind of scared to,haha, becuase of seeing alot of de-railments on t.v and the news, but its something that im planning to do someday.IT would be an experience that i would love to have and see everything in a different way,i love nature here alot and there is a train in a town an hour away that travels passenegers to other places like 4 -8 hours away from here.I guess its cheaper than taking a bus to go and paying gas for a vechicle, haha! Its just for the ride and experience for me.PLus my daughters so crazy over choo-choo trains, haha:) Peanutjar:)

Hello peanutjar. I am fine and I hope that you are well. Yes, some train journeys can be very scenic. Your daughters probably would enjoy a train trip and you would enjoy the pleasant scenery. Yes, train crashes are awful, in my country they are rare.

Trains are convenient and comfortable for a 20 hour journey. I think 9.30 is a good time to get on a night train. I hope that you will go on some scenic train journeys as well.

The best train journey, well there have been so many as I love travelling by train, there's more to see, more exciting and you can watch the different landscapes. If I had to pick one I would say the journey between Amsterdam and utrecht, more so because it was a double decker train! I had never been on a double decker train where you could actually GO UPSTAIRS! The novelty itself was unreal, and it was fascinating! Unfortunately the journey wasn't that long but it was definitely a memorable one.

Yes, the view from a double decker train can be wonderful. Thanks for your superb response about your rail journey in the Netherlands. Germany often has double decker trains. I used to go across Germany on a Weekend wonder Ticket and sometimes got the delight of going on a double decker trains. I have also been on them in France and the suburban train system in Sydney. They have cleverly designed seats that can face forwards or backwards.

I too love to travel by train. The best journey I have taken was from Toronto to Winnipeg on the Trans-Canada train in the Silver and Blue class. I had my own roomette consisting of bench, own toilet and little sink and bed attached to the wall that was lowered in the evening and made up with nice linen and a snuggly duvet. The dining car was always set with white tablecloths and silver and the meals were fantastic. There was also a games car with bar, where you could play bard games and read papers and magazines and take some fruit and tea and coffee. The dome car was higher up and had a glass dome where you could spend time and take in the landscape. Did not see any wild bear or moose though. Some people did. I slept two nights on the train and usually took a little snooze in the afternoon. The dining room seating system was really neat. Single travellers were seated at different tables for each meal so you met some interesting couples and solo travellers from all over. There were a lot of British and German people on the train for the dream trip in a life time. The drawback: Very expensive. Happy travelling to you!

Thanks for your excellent and detailed response. That sounds like a very comfortable and scenic train journey. It is lovely that you had your own roomette. It think that it must have been interesting to meet the other nationalities. Understandably it was an expensive trip. I hope that you enjoy many more great rail journeys.

I also love to travel by train. It's relaxing for me and the best thing is that although I do get motion sickness specially in cars and buses I am always fine in the train:) My best journey in a train was when I was 17. THere was this deal called Interrail - not sure if it still exists - we could travel by train all over Europe for a certain amount of time and a very affordable price. I spend our 3 month summer vacation going allover Europe and it was the best journey ever. WE sometimes stayed at a campground, sometimes - very special days in a hotel - but often we would choose to travel at night so we could sleep and save the money. I did it again when I was 19 and it was also great but the first one is the one that I will always remember. This discussion just brought back wonderful memories, thanks for starting it :)

I am glad that this discussion bought back wonderful memories. Thanks for your fantastic response. Yes, Inter Rail still exists, for people under or over the age of 26. They can choose all zones or just a few so I think it has improved since I did one in 1990. It sounds like you had a fantastic time spending a small amount of money. Yes, it is superb not to get motion sickness in trains. I hope that you take n many more train journeys that you will enjoy.

I have very fond memories of riding on trains, my grandmother used to take me and my sister on the train from Mesquite into downtown Dallas, to go meet my mom for lunch and go shopping. However, I think the best was last year, my boyfriend took me on the fall foilage train ride in PA, through the mountains in the fall, it was just beautiful, we spent the day in a small mountain town, Jim Thorpe, PA, with it's quaint shops and coffee shops, we had a blast. It was a day long trip.

I think that was my trip to Luoyang in 1997. At that time I just graduated and I went to have a travel with my friend. That's a nice trip. We went there by train and at that time no more people there. We could choose any seats we liked and the train was clean.

I have not traveled by train that much besides the Metro. The only train ride I have taken was in China from Beijing to Xian. I loved the ride, but it was a night, so I was disappointed in not being able to really see the countryside we were riding through except a few hours in the morning before we arrived at our destination.
