Breakfast around the world

We are doing a project for Girl Scouts called 'Breakfast Around the World" We will research Australia for our country. We have to find a food that is eaten in our chosen country and make samples of those foods that can be sold for 25 or 10 cents. Other troops will be doing other countries as well. This sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to learn about other countries while making a little bit of money to go to the Juliette Gordon Lowe Fund, to help girls that can not afford scouting to be able to do more through scholarships and girl op. Our problem came about when looking for a food that we could use and make for about 25 cents. Seems that the Australians eat about the same things we do here in the states. I thought you kind people might be able to help us come up with some great ideas for foods from Australia, as well as other countries around the globe. So... What do you eat for Breakfast and where are you located?

My son's, girlfriend's, Nanny is from Australia. I told him to ask her about a breakfast food and how to make it. He will talk to her tonight. I will get back to you on it.

I wonder if Nutella would count? Or if it is from Australia, probably not. How about--well, never mind, it is probably UK--marmalade on toast? Someone posted about oatcakes, that is Scottish, I guess. It seems that most of what I can think of is not really indigenous to Australia, but rather came from one of the other British countries.

Well thank you bicklelady. You are so kind. I thought about vegamite on toast, but the cost to ship some here if even possible would probably make it cost us to make even that!

Hi Marcia! I don't eat much breakfast either. If I do it is later than the average breakfast and more like a brunch. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas! and A very wealthy New Year!

I come from the good old United Kingdom, for breakfast I just have a nice healthy bowl of muesli, full of oats, raisins, bananas and nuts with semi-skimmed milk, oh and not forgetting the mug of hot black coffee to really wake me up of a morning!

Hi wolfie. We do have Muesli here. I am not sure how to pronounce it but have seen that on the shelfs at the stores. It looks and sound yummy! We just ate scrambled eggs today, but usually we have a cold cereal or toast. No coffee though, never did take a liking to it.

I searched Vegemite online and there is a place in San Antonio selling it. It costs close to $1.00 an ounce, so you would have to spread it really thin.

http://www.about-australia-shop.com/vegemite.htm This is the link. There are some other sites where it is less expensive, but I know shipping matters. I was thinking that you live in Texas, right?

Can you give me a link? I would like to check it out. Vegimite is spread thin, so that would be fine. I can even cut the bread into 4 pieces. It is only for a sample. i would love to see what it is like any way. I found one site but it was out of everything but the more expensive size. And I was not even sure what shipping would have been. i left after seeing the price for the product.

In US if you buy cheap eggs and cheap rolls, you may have one egg and one roll for breakfast. I pay 29 cents for one egg and 25 cents per roll plus tax...but maybe it is cheaper in some states.... I didn't see anything to buy for 10 cents for a long time...

Hey polochicago, you won't ever see anything to buy for 10 cents unless it is a peice of candy. That cheap though and egg and a roll.

I am from Singapore and breakfast here can range from light to heavy meals. For me, it is often 2 pieces of bread with peanut butter - cheapest if eaten at home :P At times, I do take biscuits, cereals and fruits.

Peanut butter is just as popular here. I used to eat it, until I got one of the tainted jars. By biscuits do you mean with flour, and shortening and milk. Or the sweet kind you can dunk in milk?

Well, since I am from USA, I cannot help you here. I am just logging in to see what someone else may tell you. I am very curious. It does sound like a wonderful amount of fun.
