My son wants a Playstation 3 for Christmas this year. They are so expensive though. I'm wondering what the difference in the Playstation 3 and XBox 360 is? Does one do more than the other? Are the graphics better on one than the other? Help me make up my mind what I want to get him please. Thanks

I have both, but I like XBOX 360 better, simply because there are better games on it. Just make sure you put it in a place with enough air circulation and also check where X360 vent holes are located on. Graphic-wise, both are equal to each other, unless you have a keen observation which I don't do.
A little out of topic, Nintendo Wii is not bad, but I don't like to move my hands up and down, or side to side when I'm playing a game, although some people especially kids will like it.

In terms of hardware, the PS3 is superior to the Xbox 360. Each of them has two different packages available. The core package and the deluxe. However, the core system for the PS3 is comparable to the deluxe Xbox 360. However, just technology doesn't make it a better system. The Xbox 360 being released first has more games overall, and more exclusive games. And as I stated above you can get the deluxe Xbox 360 for close in price to what the basic PS3 costs. The PS3's real advantage is the Blu-Ray DVD player which is just a high definition DVD player. If you do not have a high definition TV this will do you no good. So finally, the PS3 does edge out the Xbox 360 but either one is a very good system to have.
Unfortunately, I have to keep up with all this because my husband is like a little kid when it comes to game systems. He has been wanting a Wii though.

Graphics are not as important as how many games a console has or how good those games are. At least, this is what I think.
I'm not really sure which is better as I don't keep up with them but I can recommend a website which may help you see the differences in things like how many games they each have, and how good the graphics may be.

Maybe I should stay up to date with game consoles since I am taking classes to be a game designer?

They are both almost as eqaually good in different aspects of gaming and it depends what your son/daughter likes. The graphics a re almost similar in both of the consoles, so that isnt a problems. The PS3 is superior in its hardware as it contains a blu ray player and free multiplayer.
the xbox on the other hand does have an exceptional online gaming service which is quite worth the money. there is much more fairer gaming system as the service manages to match you up with players with same skill capability and the system will weed out anyone who uses abusive language or in any way ruins the fun of other people. I myself own an xbox and it is great wit much more games than the PS3.
