personally,i dont believe it because we are using a different calendar than the calendar that was used in Jesus Christ's time.i cant tell if it is really december 25 because there is no snow when Jesus Christ was born but in this present time December is winter time there and it is so cold.i dont think that a baby can withstand the cold if he was in a manger with only a cloth wrapped around him.what about you guys?what do you think?

On our library's website, they have a link to the history of Christmas and how and why we celebrate it on the 25th of December. The bible actually indicates that Jesus may have been born in the spring due to the mentioning of shepherds hearing their sheep as well as a couple of other minor things.
A Roman festival called Saturnalia occurred on the 21st of December as well as other pagan festivals. Like Easter, the early churches decided to celebrate Christ birth around the start of winter and these festivals in hope to convert pagans.
And, just a sidenote, Christmas wasn't always the big holiday that it is now in a lot of the world. It really wasn't celebrated until the 1500s and mostly in England. Later, Puritans denounced the celebrations and when they moved to the New World, they did not celebrate Christmas. Later, it was celebrated sporadically, but rarely because because people didn't want to be associated with English customs, especially around the time of the Revolutionary War. It wasn't until the mid-1800s that Christmas became popular in the United States.
Before Christmas became popular, Easter was the biggest Christian holiday.

oops, I meant to say "herding their sheep", not "hearing their sheep".

No, I think the festival was pagan. But, since it was very popular, the early church hoped that celebrating Christ's birthday around that time would bring more interest in Christianity.

I remember reading once that Christmas wasn't at first held in December 25 but later changed to December 25 due to some formations in the stars that tells them that it could be December 25. One thing that I believe though is that it may not be the exact date, but its the nearest date that they could come up with based on the studies of the scholars. But as a Christian, what is important to me isn't really the date but the fact that Christ was born on this earth. That in itself is worth celebrating for everyday. As they say, Christmas should be everyday.
