Gary Payton, the veteran point guard, who made his name by playing great defense, wants to join the Boston Celtics. Who wouldn't want to play with this Celtics team? I'm tempted to drive up to Boston and try out. I think Payton would be good to have for playoff time. Experience for their young point guard would be a good thing.

but gary payton is old. i guess he is already 37 or 38. im not really sure but he is in that range. he may not keep up with the up tempo of the game. anyway, where is he now? i have not seen him play for the heat this season. besides, i don't know if the celtics have an extra room for salary cap. with the three, i guess the cap has been reached.

If Payton came tot he Celtics he would play for the veteran minimum. I think he would be could to have as a mentor for the Celtics young point guard adn he would be good for about 10 minutes a game. He's a veteran and his physical shortcomings would be made up for by his basketball smarts, at least I would hope so.

I agree gary payton should be mostly a mentor. He won't make much of a diffrence on the basketball court himself. With the way bostons playing I don't think they need him.

There is no doubt that Gary is looking forward a NBA final champion. But Celtics don't need Gary, maybe he is too old to play for such a great team,if he is 28 this year, mybe Celtics will invite him,but Celtics has KG,Pierce and Allen, they can help the team have a good result

Well, as of this writing, the Los Angeles Clippers have already bought out Sam Cassell's contract and he's just waiting to clear the waivers. The Boston Celtics are pursuing him and maybe whatever role Gary Payton was speculated to have with the team may be given to Cassell instead. I'm not sure how this will play out but it sure will be interesting to see. It's highly unlikely that Cassell will overtake Rajon Rondo for the starting gig at point guard, and I don't think he'll fit in well with the Celtics' speed. Cassell has slowed down big time over the years and may either be the weak link for the Celtics this season or a valuable contributor off the bench. Remember, this is a guy who has one of the most dangerous mid-range jump shots in the game and that skill may just come in handy in clutch situations.

I don't think playing for the Boston Celtics is the best contribution Gary Payton can give. If anything, the best thing he can offer to the team is his experience, something he does not need to contribute on court. Right now, the Celtics are sporting the best record in the league, and they seem to be on their way to being the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. So I would think that he'd be better off helping the Celtics from the sidelines, perhaps as an assistant coach or a special trainer. This team has a lot of young talent: Tony Allen and Rajon Rondo I think being the primary people who could benefit from Payton's guidance. Sure, the Glove won't get a championship ring this way, but the prize is supposed to be the championship, not the ring.
