Christmas Spirit Destroyed

Christmas used to be magical. It still retains some of its charm, but by now, it has deformed into a financial enterprise as opposed to the celebration of love and forgiveness. Already at the start of october, people (at least here in toronto) are bombarded by constant and relentless advertisements pressuring you to buy camera phones, iPods, PSPs, computers, or other extremely costly appliances/gadgets for your loved ones. Whatever happened to a sweater and fruit? Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that it isn't nice to buy something great for your loved ones, but it's not about giving anymore; it's about WHAT you are giving, and this causes me great distress. Not to mention that because of all the early holidays spirit exposition, by the time Christmas comes, I already can't wait for it to be over. I know this sounds grim, but this has been on my mind for quite some time, and I think that companies have made Christmas to be a tool to generate massive revenues for them, and have nearly eliminated all the magic and sentimental value this celebration previously had.

It's true people buy more expensive presents.Just to satisfy the others. I bought some small presents this year and me and my fam or always glad with what we get.Even if it would be a chocolate bar.We like being together. People seem to be not satisfied anymore nowadays so people buy big and expensive presents. I work in a store on saturdays and a woman told me that her husband only wanted big present. It was a very nice lady so i couldn't imagine that she'd have a husband like that.

Christmas is just commercial nowadays, and we have to accept and face the fact. That's simply because of our economic 'development' and the importance we place on economic productivity. The bottomline is that you have 'worth' only if you are 'productive' in your company. When the human being is degraded to such a level, a mere economic item, whose worth is measured by his/her economic productivity, then what about a festival? The economically smart make tons of money over here, and the majority just spend. It is a spending feast. Tell me, is it possible to celebrate X'mas without spending? You have to spend on gifts, the feast, the new clothes, and so on and so forth. You could just go to mass and come back and do nothing else. But, that would be an insipid X'mas, right?

I know what you mean the real meaning of Christmas no longer seems to matter..It just seems to matter how much people can go in debt to give to others..But noone seems to remember Christ who was born to save us from sin... I wonder just how many people even go to midnight mass anymore..And then the day after Christmas everyone is standing in another line to return all the things they got that they didn't want or didn't fit.... I just wonder why we don't make things like tablecloths or other hand made things like sweaters and scarf that would mean so much more....
