My friend's dad just died last week...sad Christmas

Its really sad to have your loved one die a few days before Christmas. They must have a very bleak Christmas. I wouldn't even want to imagine it. My family even had a sad Christmas on the first Christmas after my dad died but that was 3 months before Christmas. Did any of you have a similar experience? How did it feel? How did you cope with it?
