Stock photography...Is it a rip off for the photographer or...

I don't really know what to think about it. Photography is such a saturated field. Everyone wants to be a photographer, and why shouldn't they?!? If you can have it for a hobby and make a little cash on the side then great! But some of these stock photo sites only give a person 25 cents per time that there photo is downloaded. So their photograph can be "whored" out to 4000 different magazines, websites, pamphlets, or printed out and sold and they only make $1000 from it spread out over time. :( Maybe there are pros to this...anyone have an opinion on this or maybe even some experience?
